D4, is it a good choice? (of course... i guess) |
|
Hi Guys,
I'm not an owner of a Discovery yet, but i do own a Defender 110 2010 and i'm actually thinking of getting a Disco for its confort and look.
I'm more tempted by a D4 for a few reasons, but i actually have no ideas about the liability of the car itself, is it still possible to do some stuff on the car or do i have to go through a LR dealer each time ? (oil draining, brakes (pads and disks)....
Is there a MY to avoid at any cost? any major thing to know before buying?
Thank you for your help,
Cheers
Tim

Sure those wiser than I will come along but you can check
Air suspension raises and lowers without issue
Changes to low range and drives in all gears
EPB holds the car still
All special programs can be selected
All lights
If possible check pads and if disks are badly lipped
How many miles does it have?
Has it been serviced properly, some of the high milage services need belts changing which are expensive so check if they are due or have been done
Check general body condition
Look underneath and check for off road damage

hi Zouritte, I don't know what your budget is, but look for one with the 8 speed. MY12 onwards I think.
Very happy with our 8 speed, smooth, comfortable and we get about 11l/100km around town.

Thxs Motolite,
I'm not sure about MY12 prices but i guess my budget is more around MY09 or MY10. But good to know, and i'll maybe come along a good MY12 with a few Kms thats worth it.
Is there a safe limit for Kms ? Is there some BIG items to change during services at some point (kms)?
Cheers

a quick search will find plenty of posts about cars with miles on them and service requirements. Remember they are complex cars that require regular maintenance and parts. Good hunting

I am no expert, but I am in a similar position, looking for a 2010/2011 Disco 4, I don't think I can stretch to a decent mileage 8-speed.
I have gathered some notes from this great forum on the kind of things to look for, these may help:
1. Full Service history
2. Fuel light goes off and range is correct
3. Even wear on tyres
4. Heated screen works
5. Seats move correctly
6. Sunroof operation smooth
7. Smoke from cold?
8. Gearbox smooth when warm
9. Checking it accelerates smartly without clouds of smoke and brakes well (hands off braking).
10. Check that the auto box is behaving. (slow down quickly and then accelerate, accelerate to see if it changes down well, check that it's fairly unnoticeable when changing)
11. Check the electronic brake is working well. Try stopping on a hill and not manually engaging the handbrake. The brake should hold it on it's own and should release when you pull away.
12. Make sure it's got a spare wheel slung underneath (of some description),
13. If it's got a detachable tow bar on, check you've got keys for that and it comes off, they can rust into place.
14. Check for vibrations through the steering wheel as the front diffs go along with brake discs.
15. Put the suspension down then up and make sure the compressor does not sound like it is struggling towards the end.
16. Listen and look carefully at the engine as they are an expensive lump to replace.
17. Check that the suspension is good, that it goes up and down as it should and that the terrain response system does what it's supposed to.
18. Underside for obvious damage
19. Tow bar receiver wear
20. Gearbox oil flush at 60k
I have been to see a few to get a feel for what to expect. On one of them I lowered the suspension then raised it again, and it took a very long time, in fact I am not sure it ever got back to the top.
On another the spare wheel mount had been cut through, the spare wheel had gone and it looked really rusty around the rear end of the chassis, as though it had been regularly in salt water.
On that occasion there were four Disco 4's in a row so I could compare the condition underneath very well.
The other piece of advice I have been given by everybody is 'get a warranty' then look after your Discovery.
