Take the rear bumper off is the easiest way, more likely you'll find a broken wire than a failed sensor.

I fitted the right inner sensor without removing the bumper.

Sensor for about £12 on Ebay and works great now.

I was going to take the bumper off, but due to rusted screws and bolts that felt like they might break/sheer I decided to try with it in place.

Dropped the spare wheel out and had enough space to get in underneath and managed to get fingers and tools in to disconnect the sensor, draw it backwards out through the hole in the cross-member and fit the new one in.

Plenty of light in the space to see what I was doing and persistence got there in the end.

I had some of the fixings off for the bumper cover around where I was working which gave a bit of flex to allow me to get hands in to work.
