Replacement engine - Global Engines |
|
I know that Global Engines have been mentioned in a couple of threads, but has anyone actually used them for a replacement engine?
They advertise on e-bay - see http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RANGE-ROVER-SPOR...1e65f5359c and have a website at http://www.globalengines.co.uk/
I need a new engine (Land Rover can't supply at the moment) but I don't want to part with £3.5K just to find that it's
Any feedback - good or bad (via pm if necessary) would be great.
Suggestions for good alternative suppliers in the Essex area would also be appreciated.
Many thanks
Paul

I find this interesting they say that they have fitted:-
Quote:new big end and main bearings, new pistons and rings
I don't dispute this, but where do they get them, as I understand, but may be wrong, that they are not available from Land Rover - maybe TLO can advise.

Thank you both.
That's what worried me too....... I knew that LR weren't relaasing some bits but I wasn't sure what..... I'm going to steer clear.
This is just becoming a nightmare..... no car, no replacement engine available....... I guess my only remaining options are to:
1. Try to sell it as it is - without an engine
2. Find a good Indi to fit an (unknown) engine from CWS (or elsewhere)
Disco_Mikey, I think you're just too far away otherwise it would have been round to you like a shot to fit a 2nd hand engine.
I've been using TFC for servicing but I don't think he'll want to do an engine replacement on my drive......so any suggestions for good Indi in Essex would be helpful.

In the past (20 years ago) I have had pistons made for me by:-
www.jepistons.com/
and they were able to supply rings as well. They are still very much in business.
I am illustrating that one can pistons & rings made to order.
Likewise bearings, I have had them made by ACL in Australia & County bearings in Benfleet.
I could go on, crankshafts, con rods etc.., can be custom made to a higher than OEM standard.
I believe that the difficulty may well be that Ford could claim intellectual propoerty rights in the design of these & similar components, and non-OEM manufactirers can't advertise their availability.
OEM manufacturers are no doubt contractually bound only to supply Ford, LR, Peugeot and Citroen.
I think we should be making a political fuss about this limitation of supply - write to your MPs or Euro MPs.
Nuff said !

I considered using them but thankfully sorted my engine with a new head. However I trawled the internet to find reviews on this company and found plenty on neighbouring firms within the Barking area doing engine replacement, but not a great deal on this company. I was concerned with the horror stories some people had experienced with other companies. I contacted a number of buyers who had bought replacements from Global engines and most replies were positive. One thing I did find out from them is that they remove/ replace the engine without removing the body
My advice would be to do your homework

Again I did wonder about whether and a non-LR sepcialist they would cope with the fitting etc. Everything I've read indicates that "body-off" is the way to go......
Doesn't look like Global Engines is the way to go.
I have to say that I'm becoming increasingly ed off with the whole episode

I am a little innocent - why not?
They make cracking pistons, but I have only used them for petrol engines, I am aware that diesel engine pistons have to withstand a greater compression ratio; but much lower RPM.

Have you tried Thurston engineering in Ongar? They do engine rebuilds, crank regrinding head skimming etc. I did some builing work for them and was amazed at the variety of engine sizes coming in. Think colin is the manager down there. This is not a recommendation of their work but maybe worth a call or visit if yr near.

NJSS - for the price that these 'refurbished' engines area being sold for, I don't think they will be using JE pistons! I'm not doubting the ability of JE to make a TDV6 piston. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

My son and I have a marine engine business where we restore vintage marine diesels and oil engines for the canal boat market. We get pistons, rings and liners made quite often so I know that it possible to source the "impossible" I would be wary over material specification though, particularly as there is a lot of counterfeit SE Asian rubbish around. Beware!
