Gearshift X position sensor – circuit high

After a clutch change, I've now got a P174b code (from a SnapOn diagnostic) which reads "Gearshift X position sensor – circuit high". I cna't change down to low range, a park brake fault and no reversing lights or cruise control. It clearly doesn't know what geat it's in. The car is an 08 Disco XS Manual.

Anyone want to fathom a guess what to look at first?

A little more info. A local garage has changed the XY sensor, but the fault is still the same. The diagnostics were showing that the voltage of the x sensor doesn't change at all when the gears are changed, so I'm going to assume that the next thing to change would be the Transfer box ECU.

As the problem has only present since the gearbox has been removed I would be paying close attention to the wiring/connectors to gearbox and transfer box in case they have been damaged.

Thanks Stu. I'm probably going to have to take it up to the Stealers to get them to sort it.

Out of interest, does anyone know how many hours labour might be involved in swapping out all the wiring/connectors? I'm told the looms might be difficult to extract?

Problem solved.

The Stealer's diagnosis was that the wiring connection to the transfer box had been damaged and that no voltage was getting there at all.

They gave me two options. Take everything out and replace the looms (circa £800 labour) or just replace the two wires specific to the transfer box (£500). I went for the latter and fair play to them, it's sorted and has been fine since I had it back.

Still, an expensive lesson learned. Don't trust your car to people who don't do LR. Embarassed

Mikey changed out the sensor plus the loom on my D3. Took him about 3 hours total. From memory the loom was about £80 and the sensor £180.
