Transmission fault limited gears

I experienced this fault on Sunday, fault message came up and vehicle stuck in one gear. I stopped, switched off, restarted and fault cleared. There are numerous discussions on this topic in this forum with a very wide range of possible causes ranging from poor connection to faulty brake lights and the transmission ECU. There do not appear to be many hard and fast remedies.
I am going on long trip soon so I am looking for some tips of what to do if this problem reoccurs. My fuse 30 has not popped and no problems with side or tail lights. Hopefully if problem re occurs I can stop and re start although this can be dangerous in this part of the world.
Incidentally this fault occurred whilst cruise control was being used, something I never use.( I was not driving)
Any tips and advice gratefully received.

I've had the same problem a few times recently although I wasn't using cruise control at the time. It happened twice on one day within minutes, then once the next day. I filled up with Shell fuel and went for a blast and had no problem for over a week. I thought it must of been some dodgy Tesco fuel. Then it did it once the other day. As you've said, it's not a massive problem to pull over, turn off and restart, but it all depends where it happens. I've just bought the brake light switch to see if that sorts it. I'm going on a long trip soon, so hoping it does. From what I've gathered here, the main culprits are Brake light switch and possibly fuel filter. I don't think there is a definitive answer unfortunately. I'm going to replace both before my road trip anyway and hope for the best.
