Driving back to the UK last week through France on nice smooth roads with the window open, I could hear a distinct wheezing from the car when I just lifted the throttle a little bit.
Nothing bad but should it be there?
So it is a 2.7TDV6 Auto 2005. 180,000 miles so run in, just!
I have a BAS silicon hose from the intercooler to the manifold that I know is OK.
I have tried to check the the turbo to intercooler pipes but can't see anything or feel any obvious splits or holes as it is rather difficult to get in there for a good view.
I'm sure it is induction related and not the torque converter or transmission, though I could be wrong.
Anybody got any thoughts?
Best
Ian

My first thought would be the torque converter.

Yogi972 not the brightest of suggestions but I see where you are coming from!
Cruising up nice smooth departmental roads (The old Route National) at a steady 90 kph with lovely warm fresh air is very therapeutic! I give my self a goodly time to get to the hotel in Dieppe and so doesn't matter if I am early or late arriving. I then pop down to the ferry at 10am after a good nights sleep, coffee and croissants, all very civilized.
Robbie, I was wondering about the torque converter, but as there are no other side effects, I wonder if 'They all do that sir.' is the correct reply.
I've been through the judder and hunting with burnt-out oil in the autobox at 140,000, double flushed, which doesn't really work, and eventually went for the 'transfusion' system which gave the box and torque converter a new lease of life. As that was 40k miles ago I could be due another 'transfusion'.
The power delivered from engine to wheels is very smooth with no obvious problems.
The one thing I haven't done is change the transfer box oil. Maybe it is the internals of the Magna Steyr asking for new blood!

My car has always made a brief hum on releasing the accelerator abruptly when cruising too. Barely audible but if you're on a very smooth road with no background noise you can hear it and reproduce at will.
I'll get the same noise come on constantly if - and only if - all three of these circumstances are met:
-cruising at 60-65km/h with slight load
-trans is dead cold
-5th gear selected
Like a weird mechanical humming noise. I also suspect it's the torque converter.
Because it's a very specific set of circumstances I only noticed it about 60K km ago, but it's probably been happening much longer. Change of auto oil made no difference.
Had the car nearly 100K km and it hasn't gotten any better or worse, so I'm not really worried about it.2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

2000 Audi A4 avant 1.8t Q Sport - Phantom Black/black 385K KM
1990 Nissan Pintara TRX - red - lots of mods - 439K KM
It's seems very common - I've heard a sort of shooshing noise on both auto and Spanish boxes, particularly in low range so suspect transfer box, though the TC does make a similar noise as it gets older, but that sounds more like it's from around the turbo area. ( my box was rebuilt last year and make this noise before, but seems to have gone subsequently)Mark.
