They can fail but the failure rate is quite low on the D3 compared to other vehicles.
I'd get it repaired, evacuated, filled (refrigerant, oil & UV dye) and tested by a specialist.

Well I've discovered this week on the first long run of any kind in the warm for 9 months that at seven and a half years old my aircon is - I suspect it is that it just needs recharging - fans blare away quite merrily blowing out tepid air and will stop if I wind the climate control temperature setting up far enough.
Probably just going to bung it at Halfords to start withSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

My a/c, manual type doesn't blow any cold air. Had it checked and full of gas and no fuses gone, when it is on it just blows cold air but not really cols as it should, anyone ideas, pipes under the bonnet aren't getting chilly either.

There are other reasons it may not work it will have a pressure ssensor on it somewhere if this is not registering or has another problem . Some measured values from a diag tool would help .The compressor or related wiring could possibly have a concern. You're not afraid of the dark are you ?
