A strange noise....

Ok, so been a nice quiet happy few months with no problems. And then of course I notice a bit of an issue. So thinking about booking the car in and thought I would ask for some opinions. Here's the issue:

Driving along the motorway when I turn the steering wheel to the right there is a strange humming noise, sort of sounds a bit like something rubbing. When the steering wheel is straight there is no noise, when I turn it to the left there is no noise. Seems to get louder with more speed. What do you think? Is it a bearing gone? If so, what sort of cost to sort?

Thanks guys as always.

Anyone think it sounds like a wheel bearing? Apparently it's pretty common.

Does sound like a bearing. You could jack it up and check for play. Thumbs Up

On the fronts, the whole hub is changed: http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/rfm500010...6812-p.asp Wink

It's quite straightforward to DIY or, equally, labour shouldn't be too high. Thumbs Up

Thanks. Do I have to do both sides at the same time?

No, but, if it's at a fair mileage, there is the thought that the other one might not be far behind. Thumbs Up

There is a general rule that if the noise gets worse when turning in a particular direction it is usually the opposite bearing which is the problem ( or is it the other way round Question ).

When one of mine went, I ended up changing both as a precaution. Not a difficult job.

Thanks guys. The Indie is looking at it soon so I will ask him how bad the other side looks so I can decide if I do both or not.

Hope it's all sorted before I go to France to buy copious amounts of wine and cheese!

All sorted, and it was one of the wheel bearings. Noticed some uneven wear in the tyres, can a dodgy wheel bearing cause this? Had the tracking checked and its fine.
