Strange "popping" noise coming from the fuel tank
Hi,
I have an LR3 V6 and just recently I have been getting a strange popping noise from the fuel tank filler cap and the engine revs start fluctuating!!! As soon as I take the fuel cap off I get a sudden rush of air into the tank as if a vacuum has built up and the car starts idling fine.......
Can anyone shed any light on what needs to be replaced or what is causing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Prof,
Is it possible that you have an aftermarket fuel cap?
IIRC the fuel tank vents into the tank filler neck. If there is no further ventilation, this could give rise to your symptoms.

You could end up imploding the tank as it's not designed for vacuum conditions.
It could be a blocked vent line so best to leave cap slack until you fix it.Stew,

I'm not sure leaving the cap loose on a petrol is a good idea and will probably trigger the check engine light. The problem is likely the breather pipework, the liquid vapour separator or a problem with the charcoal canister EVAP system purge valve.
I'd start the hunt at the purge valve and its wiring. There is a fuse for it in the battery junction box but if that blew I think it would trigger a dash warning as it feeds other stuff too (Fuse 5, 10 amp), but worth checking.
