Belgium 2005 LR3 TDV6 S Manual Unknown ColourLR3
exhaust smoke on cold start

Dear LR3s

Looking for solutions.

LR3 TDV6 2005.

I had new glowplugsinstalled early January 2014 by the LR dealership in Waterloo Belgium.

While driving in the South of France, one glowplug popped out.

I took the car to Espaceland in Nimes for repair. They fitted a thread repair insert on one of the glowplug.

Then I drove back my car to Belgium and it started to smoke on cold start.

Recently, I have had 6 new OEM injectors and 2 new EGRs installed by the LR dealership in Waterloo Belgium. Most of the old injectors at 90.000 kms were rusty. and EGRs were full of carbon.

Smoke continues on cold start but it is less than before. After a few minutes, it does not smoke.

I have little exhaust smoke after seriously revving up the engine. No sign while driving.

Smoke color is white and smells a little. Smoke plume raises and dissolves. Some condensation drips out of the exhaust pipes, that is normal.

No visible water contamination in the oil. Coolant level stable.

Could it still be a possible head gasket leaking into combustion chamber?

Can water or coolant enter into the air flow going in the combustion chamber? Can a crack appear when cold in the head around the glowplug thread insert allowing coolant to come in the mixture? And then close itself when warm?

Any clues on the origin of this smoke.

When switching the ignition key, is the ECM setting injectors with maximum impulses overfueleling the mixture?

I used the Hawkeye and sees that one injector is giving more than the others. No DTCs otherwise. No water in fuel according to Hawkeye.

Can injectors be tuned individually?

Is the return fuel line clogged or when the engine is switched off, is fuel still pulsed into the injectors?

How can I drain the fuel tank to remove possible water?

Help appreciated

It should flash up on the dash if water is in the fuel.

You say the coolant is stable, have you lost any coolant at all?

Have you used an emissions sniffer on the coolant bottle (the air space, not the fluid) to check for hydrocarbons?

Injectors are probably the hot favourite but don't overlook a compression issue. Seeing the actual injector values would be handy.

Thanks for the first replies.

While your were answering, I was back at the car and checked the map sensor. It was clogged with soot. I cleaned it with Start Pilot and WD4 , a paper clip to free the air way.

I put it back in plce and started the engine, no "mil engine light" at dashboard.

Can it be that I have the "stupid" rather than "smarter" version of a LR3 so light ? mine is a TDV6 S

I will update tomorrow morning after starting it from cold.

Best weekend

Mine does it when really cold , I'm thinking a Glow plug on the blink and its just blowing out un-burnt fuel till that cylinder fire's up

Ouch. The pressure sensor inside the sensor is incredibly delicate, so best not to poke anything down the hole.
