Brake pad wear - Excessive?

Had one of our Disco 4's in the dealer for a service, just done 30,000miles. Dealer has come back to say the rear pads are worn and also scored the disc. Now I tried arguing that there is surley an issue here, in that the low pad light never came on and that the front pads are fine and when I looked at it, it appeard to be just one side that was worn.

Now they agreed to investigate but required me to authorise the strip down, meaning if they didn't find issue, I would have to stand the cost.... hey presto, apparentely everything is as it should be... Which kinda leaves me Question and a £400 bill for rear pads and discs...

Should I push it further? Or just stand it...

It sounds to me as though you have a piston on one of your calipers may be jamming.

This may account for the uneven wear. Also my check brake pads warning never came on until the front pads were worn nearly to the metal backing.

I would be inclined to say to the dealer no worries I will pop down for a look at the scoring, bet they change their tune there and then!
All discs score and wear that is after all the nature of their business, next time you are shopping look at every car you walk past and you will see what i mean.

Yeh, the piston jamming is what I assumed it would be, not what I would expect from such a new vehicle though.

I decided I had little option but to bite the bullet, when I got down there to pay the bill, they had charged me for 2 discs even though only one had scoring, then the icing on the cake was charging for a wear pad sensor... that had never triggered and had caused the issue in the first place. Needless to say we will not be using Farnell Leeds in the future.

My brake wear light came on and I only drove 25 miles before changing, the pad with the indicator was nigh on the metal and the indicator was broken when removed. Very little time is given, but on the other hand full use of the pad!

You should always change discs in pairs so that would be their reason for that.

I would keep a close eye on the wear rate and at the first sign of uneven/excessive wear get them to do something about it.

Most of the time its not the piston that stick's, but the two sliders in the disc carrier. This seems to get missed quite a bit.. I did a D3 the other day had anew epb shoes and pads only a month ago, I found one of the rear sliders stuck solid Shocked .

Flack Thumbs Up
