Limp mode
Help, my 57 D3 has gone into limp mode but no warning light has come on, a mate put a diagnostic on and got the fault code P045A Gas recirculation - B - Control Circuit, meant to be driving to Wales tonight, what are my chances ?
From what you say, you have an all to common EGR problem. You may be OK for your trip, you may not be. It may not be practical now but it is possible to blank the EGRs temporarily with a 2p piece. That code relates to the left hand side one by the battery (the more fiddly side ).
In the long term, you have two choices - blank the EGRs complete with emulators and software patch or replace the EGR valve. The latter is cheaper but I would recommend the former as the best solution for your engine. Thanks for your reply, great weekend away, but decided not to take the car, I think the blanking off is the way to go, but guess this is not a DIY job ? Do you think it is something a local mechanic could do or would I need to take to a specialist. I'm thinking of maybe replacing the one valve for now and completing the blank off at a later date as a planed job when more convenient, I'm interested that you say the fault code shows the left hand sensor, when we has it on diagnostics we unplugged the sensors and rechecked the codes, the RHS sensor read A the LHS sensor read C and the bit in the middle where they meet ( and nice and accessible ) was reading B, before I start buying sensors I would like to know a bit more about the codes. Thanks again for your advise
I'm not enough of an expert so explain further with the codes (I did a quick search that night to check the side and that's what came up - left side - which was what I expected. ). Not sure which sensor you're referring to in the middle - the MAP is the one on the top of the butterfly housing (not specifically EGR related)?
I've just realised, you said no engine MIL. Is your VIN a ...6A... (06MY) or ...7A... (07MY)? This makes a big difference to the ease and cost of blanking them. If it is in fact 06MY, then blanking them is very cheap and simple and no software changes or emulators are needed.
For either type, the blanking itself is DIY-able (did one only yesterday) - The software may be also with an interface such as the BAS one. Hi
Just to confuse things I have a 07 reg but it is a 08MY?
So I have to replace or blank with emulators.
Does anyone have an estimate how much it costs to fit the emulators? I think my second set of EGRs are starting to fail.
Yes, you'll need emulators and/or a software patch.

Yes, indeed not. The physical blanking is the same still though. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Thanks again, something my local garage could do ? Thinking of the mapping blanking looks pretty straight forward, if a little awkward

If you went for the BAS ones, you can apply the map yourself using the interface. Alternatively, the owner of the RRS I did yesterday has been in touch with Gary @ Alive Tuning and, apparently, there's a dealer setting up in Bristol.
Whoever you go for, make sure it's a reputable company. Be very wary of those that are too cheap. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Wow - I have been making some inquires and am now more confused than ever, it sounded so simple yesterday.
I have contacted several local auto tuners, all have said yes easy job and will take a couple of hours, when I have mentioned the emulators all have said they don't need emulators, once blanked the mapping sorts out the computer apart from one who said blanking was not possible for my car, one however says he has a D3 on a 57 plate that he has successfully blanked and remapped without emulators and is confident mine should be easy.
I also contacted a local Land Rover Specialist, not main dealer, who told me that blanking was illegal and the MOT are currently changing the test criteria so that everyone who has already blanked will need to un-blank and refit, they suggested I come in for a full diagnostic and should expect to pay about £500 per side for the new valves.
The main dealer I contacted, didn't say it was illegal, but did say that it was unwise to blank as the exhaust omissions would be higher and it was likely the vehicle would not Pass an MOT
Can anyone help, the more research i do the more confused I get, I don't get this with my old 2a!!

It is possible to blank and remap without emulators. Some do this in a more sympathetic way than others.
There is an intent to make the MoTs tighter at some point in the future.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
It can be done without emulators, just the software modification.
The MOT may be changing to affect this, if it does, emulators would be required to avoid failure.
Blanking them may increase SO2 and NOx emmisions. It will reduce particulate matter and fuel consumption (and thus, CO2 emissions). It should also help prolong the life of the engine.
To my knowledge, blanking is not specifically illegal as such.
Currently, a blanked vehicle would only fail the MOT if the engine MIL is left illuminated.
Hope this clarifies a few things. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC
