Safety feature Good One!! |
|
The inside of my D3 windscreen was very dirty so I decided to clean it whilst removing the old tax disk which is not required to be displayed any more.
While rubbing up the glass I accidentally knocked the gear lever (manual) into first gear. Later on when I went to start the engine without depressing the clutch, as I was chatting away. Nothing!
All the ignition lights on but nowt. Then I de clutched & checked the gear lever to find that it was 'in 1st gear'. I never leave it in gear & I am the only driver! So it's good job that LR have this safety feature built in to protect 'Numptys' like me. Over 50 years of driving all types of motors & still a mistake can happen when you are distracted by something! Great!

My wife left the kids playing in the car and next time she went to start it, didn't check to see if it was in neutral. I managed to bend the garage door mostly back in to shape, luckily noone was in front of her.
I have conditioned myself to always start manual cars with the clutch pedal depressed.

Those who learned their driving when the driver was in charge of everything on the vehicle start the engine with the clutch depressed to reduce load on starter motor. They also check lights, fuel, etc before every trip not just be surprised when a new warning lamp lights up. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Mike,
Do you need updated Body Control software to enable this feature? Might upgrade mine this weekend...

I never knew I had this,
But as Navigator says those of us who passed our test many moons ago were taught to depress the clutch before turning the key ( you also had to put said key in the lock on door to open/lock it )
Even SWMBO's car Astra you can't start without depressing clutch even if it is in neutral
You learn something new every day,
Well as they say, whoever THEY are!

Driving Test & Good practice on start up. |
|
Yes it's all ways good practice to check that the gear lever is in neutral and to depress the clutch pedal before turning the key to start the engine.
I passed my car driving test in 1964 & my P C V bus driving test in 1989. Then drove a bus for 23 years, I couldn't even begin to imagine how many times that I have started up motor engines up till now, without mishap.
Still maybe because my mind was on something else or simply not paying proper attention, or yes getting older, I turned the key with the car in gear & without depressing the clutch.
Lucky for me that Land Rover have this safety feature installed which prevented the engine turning over. For had it fired the result could have been dire especially for my garage door!
So folks progress in safety equipment is always a good thing, sometimes to protect us from ourselves!
Cheers.

Flano
Best put that in the for sale section, or maybe mods will move it for you.
Also edit your post and delete your number, as it's a public forum
Too late I see it's been done,
Must type quicker

I learnt to drive in the in the 80's and was taught to declutch when starting a car. Primarily to reduce the load on the starter motor.
The only car I car I can think of that declutching don't help is the Reliant Kitten a mate of mine had - it has a carbon bearing, rather than roller - and when you declutched when the engine was running, it slowed down due to the drag
(As an aside, he took the body off to paint the chassis one weekend - just lifted it off with ropes off the garage door frame ) Mark.
