How to charge a D3?
I have done a few searches and can't seem to find the ideal way to charge the battery?
Is it best to just connect and charge in situ with cables connected?
Removing cables and just charging battery?
Leave one on etc I take it the list will go on but I'm currently chairing with both positive and negative disconnected and hope this is ok.
Any guidance and suggestions would be appreciated thanks, Sam.

I do it with the battery connected but I did check with a techie friend who had the same charger that it was OK. Just croc clips to the terminal, no fancy connections.

A fair proportion of the membership just plugs a Ctek charger into the tow electrics. No other changes.

I asked a similar question a while back. General consensus was to just connect up the charger leaving the battery connected. Over the 2 months I've changed the battery 4 times this way.
My new Exide battery arrived today so I'm hoping this top up charging becomes less frequent.Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Would that apply to any old charger? I've got a 20 year old one (no access to my proper one) that I was going to use but thought better of it, I didn't want to disconnect the battery and was worried if the charger would cause problems with the car's electronics.

Thanks for your advice, I suppose I need to get towing electrics fitted then eventually? But for now I'll try charging with the battery in wired up.

Charging via towing electrics isn't essential but if your car is completely dead then you won't be able to get the car unlocked (passanger door manual emergency lock is often seized solid). In those circumstances you can get juice into the car and at least unlock it.

Depends on the charger I guess but I'm not tempted to use anything that isn't a modern computer controlled charger on the D3/D4.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

I've been using an old 3.5 Amps RMS charger. It's got a simple full wave rectifier and some resistance driven led's. It's been ok for the few times I've used it.Freelander SE 2005 Auto.

Just an update, I charged the battery as I posted earlier and the hdc light has gone yay.
The charger I used was an old halfords 1800cc and over diesel charger. The charging light was still on so I'll give it another go tomorrow so that only the green light is lit. Thanks again for the help.
