Yes you will get smoke if you have some glowplugs down as the diesel has not burnt on startup, the cycle for the plugs is controlled by the engine ecu that gets information from a few temp sensors around the car, It then decides the amount of fuel and sets the timer for the glowplugs.

Because the plugs are not heating fully so the fuel is not fully burnt ... I have one or two glow plugs down on my car and it to smokes on initial startup

It depends on the colour of the smoke at to the exact science. White smoke from cold is often finely atomized unburned fuel. Black smoke is partially burnt fuel, ie it didn't create enough heat to burn cleanly.
White smoke with a hot engine but cold atmosphere is generally water vapour.

In this cold spell I get a bit of smoke and lumpy running for a few seconds, guessing one or two of the plugs are on their way out. No doubt the rest may follow.

Best get my FBH working and a BAS remote kit fitted, cheaper than new plugs!!!

Unburned vaporised fuel it is then.
This will pass once the cylinder temperature climbs enough to fire the fuel.
All the glow plug does is preheat the cylinder to fire the fuel from cold.
