Id plug one end into the VGA port on my computer and then then the idea would be to cut the other end off and then try to find where to splice it into the FBH to use the free software.

I have seen it done with the OBDII connectors using three wires one to the battery live one to the ground and another the the red wire on the FBH.

The VGA port will be no good to you as it's for video/display.

I see so there is no way it would communicate through the VGA with the program.

I also have the mongoose OBDII cable with the USB one end I'm having no luck with that to. I have connected it using three of the pins in the digram from here

Am I correct in thinking there is 16 brown wire on here to battery live then black bottom left to earth then the red cable is spliced into the red cable on my FBH or is this far to straight forward and wishful thinking Mr. Green

Try pin 4 or 5 to earth (or both), some adapters are wired up slightly differently internally.

Have you seen www.disco3.co.uk/fbh ?

Like Martin says try pin 4 for negative. I struggled for ages with pin 5 and then found a post suggesting 4 and it worked instantly. Thumbs Up

Presume you have driver for obd installed and windows recognises the cable?
