Castrol 2T use by date

Guys
Don't know if you can provide any advice. A while ago I bought about 20 bottles of Castrol 2T when Tesco had its special offer on, as many of us did. Grabbed one of the last ones out of the garage today to put in the car and noticed the use by date was out by nearly 2 years.

Is it OK to still use it or will it cause any problems? I would have thought it was fine because it's an additive and not meant for lubrication, as it would in a 2 stroke engine, but willing to be put right.

I just bought some oil from Honda for my new generator, I was going to buy a couple of bottles as the postage was the same but they told me it has a shelf life of around 2yrs max then loses it's properties, so I only bought one bottle for next years service.

The bottle they sent has April 2014 on so don't know if that is the made date or use by date, will speak with them on Monday Wink

Actually that makes sense now, i bought them about 2 years back.
Get so use to seeing use by dates on stuff didn't even think it could be a manufacturer date Embarassed

Oil lasts for thousands/millions of years in the ground!!

I would suspect "sell by dates/use by dates" are marketing hype....
If its still sealed I would have thought it would last pretty much indefinitely.

It will be ok if the container has been kept closed, oil like petrol and brake fluid adsorbs moisture from the air. Manufacturers put these notices on items to cover themselves.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

It's the additives that degrade.

The additives are preserved by the oil. The weak spot is the polymers in the plastic bottle which the oil likes to get friendly with, but it does last a fair while if not left in the heat/sun.

OK maybe its

OK to use out of date 2T stuff after all its meant to be burnt & was designed to do this anyway in 2 stroke Lube-roil systems (no crankcase oil)...all D3/D4 owners are doing is using it as a fuel additive.....what the hell difference is this going to make when its mixed with 60 or 70 litres of diesel & burnt

Crankcase (engine) oil - maybe shouldn't be used...as its duty is significantly different...however I have 1 litre bottle of this stuff kept in my XK that are three years old...they will be used in there

I have to agree that brake fluid, steering system fluid should not be used from opened bottles that have been kept in what may be conditions that could affect their condition (intake of moisture)...the bottles of this stuff I have ever bought & used for top ups have never stayed with me that long.

I also have to agree on some other things with date stamps....the main one being water...I thought incorrectly that water (mineral) in a plastic bottle would be Ok if past the date...far from it....they usually taste nasty.
I have to question glass bottles though ?

Not that many years ago engine oil was supplied in glass & these were re-usedGlass ought to be used as it is the ultimate re-use material.
 BREXIT - done properly.
