| Bush change question - rear upper arms |

I'm planning on changing my rear upper arm bushes, probably to RRS versions. Nothing looks to be too difficult, reading the Haynes manual (yes I should know better!) it states something along the lines of "if replacing with standard bushes, the position in the arm has to be marked before removal, otherwise special Land Rover tools need to be used to fit the new ones.
Can anyone enlighten me what this is about? Its not obvious what plane of positioning it refers to? WHat are these special tools. Incidently the manual goes on to say if replacing with poly bushes then bush position does not matter. Not such a Disco Newbie now!

Answer from an amateur: it's normal practice to mark the location of the bolts with spray paint before removal, the top bolt has adjustment on the hub to set the rear camber. If you are just fitting bushes you may get away without 4 wheel Alighnment but not if you fit new arms. The hardest part spears to be access to seized bolts that may need cutting to remove, particularly the front ones. It can when others can't,

Seized bolts are definitely your biggest enemy.......
I'm just in the process of replacing mine. n/s one was seized solid and needed cut out with a recip saw but the offside came out a dream.
I'm replacing my bushes for poly so did anti roll bar bushes too which are quite fiddly.
The marking part will be your camber adjustment at the knuckle at the top of the hub.
I'd advise 4 wheel alignment and soaking at least 24hrs before in de-block oil

Happily all 6 bolts loosen and turn freely - the joys of a high mileage but well looked after car - the arms have been changed before and the bolts greased upon replacment. Thanks for the tip on marking the camber adjustment, I did do that!
The references in the Haynes appear to be in the context of bush position in arm rather than in relation to the bolts - hence I am puzzled..... Not such a Disco Newbie now!

The way I read it this is to do with the orientation of the bush itself within the arm. The bush is not a uniform solid piece of rubber but has fenestrations therefore I guess the orientation of the bush in the arm is critical if you're simple replacing the bushes and not the arms. I guess the assumption being that if you buy arms that the bushes come correctly installed. -------------------------------------------------------------------

If it's just the bushes your changing.
Look at the old bush there should be arrows on the rubber bit that attaches the outer to the inner I think they point up and down if you mark where this is on the arm and put the new ones in accordingly

Ah, that sounds do-able, thanks. Makes sense and I guess the poly bushes are solid, hence don't need alighning.
Still puzzled about the "special tools" Not such a Disco Newbie now!
