I use it from time to time usually on twisty country roads,

Sports mode just tunes the gearbox to prefer lower gears. I use it on twisty roads, when overtaking or in very hilly terrain.

It hurt mpg a bit but I wouldn't be getting good mpg in those situations anyway. The command shift doesn't automatically revert to full auto when you're in sport mode.

A LRE instructor told me that if you use Sport Mode on a twisty road and drive "normally", you should achieve better mpg and have a smoother journey. The theory being that when slowing or braking for the bends the revs aren't falling as much.

Seems to work IMO.

The problem with that is that if you use sport mode on a twisty road, it's impossible to drive "normally". Your right foot suddenly gets a lot heavier and your grin gets a lot bigger.

You know you're really using sport mode properly when SWMBO starts making a wailing noise from the passenger seat. Laughing

Well we will need a full and comprehensive report. Please turn the Blackview around so it fully records SWMBO's facial and vocal reactions. Please ensure you use the full engine/twin turbo capablility backed up by the excellent D4 braking sytem. It is inevitable that a small increase in fuel consumption will occur but this will in no way decrease the pure pleasure you will derive from the experience (it might end abuptly when you get home but you will still have the memories for compensation........even if SWMBO removes your spheroids.

I tend to use it most of the time with the flappy paddles, especially on motorways. It holds the gear if you want to speed up say from 50 - 70 in a line of traffic where otherwise it would change down. I also have quite a big hill on the way home, where if in D it will change down unnecessarily, using S and paddles it will just stay in 8th and be quite happy at 60. It does improve the MPG if used like this as it isn't trying to be a sports car. Whistle Whistle

On the mini LRE course at Windsor Horse show last week, the LRE driver was using Mud/ruts, low range & with Sport mode selected to keep it in 1st gear (M&R holds 1st under low/normal throttle but will change up given a bootful - which this course didn't need as 1150 revs max took it round easily nor would it have been desirable).

Because the course is designed as tight & nadgery just at the limit of the D4's approach & departures angles , HDC wasn't in play with the driver in full charge of throttle & brake control.

I haven't found much use for Sport myself but I'll defintely experiment now especially off road

I've used it once, at a set of lights boy racer in the next lane, the look on his face as I flew off the line Laughing

It was childish, but I did enjoy it.

A work colleague of mine recently went on the off road experience and the instructor told him about putting in to sand mode at traffic lights and give it 10 seconds to set itself up and then boot it. It apparently does not hang around but this came with a warning of 'not to frequently as it could damage the diffs?

I use the Sportsmode offroad in combination with the paddles to prevent the gearbox to overrule my gear selection. In Germany, the official LR offroad trainings recommend this procedure and it works fine for me.
