When the tow bar is removed you have to push the little pin in on the front closest to the ball, the green knob will then move slightly and allow the key to be turned and lock the knob and then be released, hope that helps and makes sense.

When the tow bar is fitted to the car and it "clicks" into place, the key can be turned and removed, it's designed to be retained in place when off the car.

As Russell says though you can remove it by pressing in the small pin, this releases the larger locking pin that normally locks the bar in place in the cars socket.

Remember if you do take the key out, you need to reverse it all to get the hitch into the chassis.
