OOPS -she did it again

Planning a trip away from home, leaving Thursday night on the car ferry.

So we were driving along yesterday when the battery light came on - first course of action was to turn SWMBO's heated seat.

Made it to our destination, checked the voltage, which was an eye popping 10v Shocked

Turned off the engine and jumped out, put baby to bed and by the time we got back out the baterry was too flat to even open the boot.

Thought to myself the car will obvoiusly need charged so connected up the charger which seemed to pulse, thought nothing of it, left it on charge and went to sleep.

Woke up in the morning and realised there must be a short circuit, rushed out and disconnected everything, removed the battery and put it on charge again.

I just hope the short is in the alternator and that I haven't destroyed the battery, also hoping Steve can sort me out with a new alternator in time Whistle

Anybody had experience with short's not being the alternator, that is my worst fear.

Can't help thinking it has to be the alternator- would be a heck of a short to draw the voltage down to 10v after/whilst you have been running it.

Some chargers enter 'pulse mode' to try and recover a badly discharged battery - it is part of the de-suplhation process in which it tries to release the sulphur from the plates back into the electrolyte. From memory I think the C-tek chargers do this (higher amperage ones anyhow).

Fingers crossed it is just the alternator - there was a shortage of Denso's recently however!

Any port in a storm, I was seriously surprised she could run at 10v, especially after some of the stories you hear on here.
