Hand Brake Failure &Loud Screeching Noise - HOW LONG TO

Over the weekend we had a hand brake failure on our Disco 3. When we try to release the EPB the car just makes a loud screeching noise. We had no previous noise or problem before this.

We have had it taken to a Land Rover garage straight away and they are saying that the parking brake module has broken thus locking in place all the wheels. Not only this, to repair the hand brake fault , they would need to change the module ,hand brake shoes discs and brakes , the module has got stuck ripped the rear shoes and scoured the inside of the disc.

Does this sound right?

This is all costing over 1,000

Not only this, but they say it will take 7 hours to repair.

Again, does this sound right?

We had the car serviced last month too? At a main dealer.

I can't see how the pads and discs have gone as the car did not go anywhere once the EPB locked up.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could you still drive it? "With all the wheels locked in place"

Normally it's a case of just adjusting the EPB. Shocked

No, it would not move at all. Put it into drive and it stayed with warning light on. Pull the barking brake lever and it mad a loud screeching noise. So got a tow truck to lift it on to truck and get it to garage asap.

When mine did this it just needed adjustment. The inside of the disc (Top Hat shape) acts as a brake drum for the park brake. I cannot see if as you have had no previous problems and the vehicle has not been driven, how have the disc and shoes been damaged?

I did not know there was any emergency release to be honest. So no.

I did not want to try anything else in case I damaged it as I am rubbish with cars.

That's why I thought I could trust the main dealer.

Should the main dealer check the brakes, pads and shoes on a full service?

They are saying they do not check these unless they make a noise.

How did they get it onto a recovery vehicle with the wheels locked solid - did they drag it?

Sorry, it was the back two wheels that were locked (apparently that is what locks the hand brake). We put the car in neautral and the tow truck reversed the ramp to the back wheels. The front wheels going around on to the ramp. When just before the back wheels, we had lots of washing up liquid and grease on the metal of the truck and dragged it centimetres. They garage admit this would have never caused problems with the discs and pads. So did the tow truck who said that he had seen this before and done this a million times.

I have a couple of experiences with this...

First time it was a shock TBH as it didn't move Evil or Very Mad

Didn't know of the release options available either ... the place I bought it from kept it for 3 weeks ... to try and fix it Shocked

Second time round as a member on here .... wheels off a couple of tweeks and all sorted, no parts or cost involved except some beer tokens for Flack Mr. Green ... this is the thread ...

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic108403.html

There is other information if you 'search' previous threads on the EPB the Brake bible ... Thumbs Up

Does not sound like you have a very good dealer as they should check the handbrake operation and inspect the rear discs / handbrake shoes on a service.
Mine was intermittent and would sometimes lock on so I carried the hook from the tool kit in the cab as did the previous owner and had the emergency release cover off just in case. it was driving me mad so I booked into RRlandrover in Battersea who sorted it in 2 hours including new rear discs for less than a 1/3 of the price you have been quoted, mind you it was a 250 mile round trip for me Whistle
