Would the same thing apply though by using the nato hitch on the D3 as the mounting needs so much modification?

Changing the hitch depends which one is fitted in the first place. My Sankey had a civilian pattern Bradley hitch, and I was able to just unbolt the ring from the drawbar rod and fit the 50mm ball coupling. These being standard alternatives in the Bradley Range. The hitch was rated at 3500kg.
Legally hitches on Discovery need to be type approved ( Except Commercial versions)

Yes not straight forward, either extensive fabrication to a mounting for the D3 or altering the trailer coupling, should be picking up the trailer at the weekend so I guess a decision will be on the cards, I'll keep an eye on your build as this is my plan.
this is the old type i did much shorter one now the fit the shorter receiver Home of RLD Hidden winch mounts Spare wheel Locks Trailer Body Fabrication ray@rld-tech.co.uk D3/4 sump plates MY 14 sump plates and the Discovery Sport wheel protectors Discovery 5 wheel locks

+1 for RLD option - got mine with my Sankey and it tows like a dream, one of the best bit of engineered kit going (Not seen his spare wheel protector yet though - but it's on the list ).
The other thing to remember is that the RLD option has two anchor points (Normal hitch area and it is connected through your rear towing eye) - so I feel much more confident towing my incredibly heavy wide track Sankey with this than if I was relying on just the normal Land Rover Swan Neck tow ball on its own - it also raises the height of the two hitch, so the Sankey is not at a stupid low angle
You can pick the piece that goes into the Disco on the bay for around £90 - can't see any on there at the moment though, nato coupling about £50 - then you best ask Ray how much his bit of kit is Iggy/Ieuan
