Engine system fault

Hi all

On starting my D3 leaving work last night the dash displayed the 'i' symbol with engine system fault, the car drove and felt as normal. I set off and at a set of traffic lights took the opportunity to turn off the engine and restart, the message had gone out and remained out for the rest of the drive home. I've not used the car today, should I be worried about anything?

One possibility - sticking actuator Confused If an ESF showed, a fault should be stored so might be worth getting yer codes read and you may be able to lubricate the actuator - if indeed that is the problem Thumbs Up

Well it was midnight and no one else was about, would it keep showing the fault message if there is an issue?

If, for example, the actuator was sticking intermittently the ESF would show on screen when it was sticking, if it then freed off, the message would go away but still record it in the memory thats why getting the codes read will help identify the cause! Thumbs Up

To be honest with the info you have given it could be anything. Best to get the fault code read and post the code for more info Thumbs Up

Slight update, spoken to independent they are going to fault code it next week for me next week.

However I am suspecting turbo or actuator. This morning the warning message was displayed, remained on all the way to work felt sluggish. Later it went out, with engine idling felt the intercooler hose able to squeeze it easily and when engine revved pressure in the hose increased. On my way home drove perfectly until four miles from home, under acceleration warning came on and sudden loss of power. Got home and had better half rev the engine while I squeezed the turbo hose, there was hardly any increase in pressure.

I appreciate I still need to have the codes read, but I'm leaning towards the turbo and hoping that the actuator repair kit might sort it.

Hello all

I dropped my D3 off at Land Rover specialists in Hull this morning just spoke to them and have been told my turbo needs a new linear motor, the guy who looked at it wasn't available so I haven't been given the fault code. I was surprised at what they had said, I mentioned the actuator link rod repair I trying to free it off and was told "good luck with that we won't try that" and they had never heard of replacing the link rod.

From what I have read here I gathered the motor could not be replaced it's self. Also they said they're need to remove from diff to get access to the turbo I got the impression they were not interested. I'm swaying towards removing the battery and tray to get to the aviator to see if it moves. What's your thoughts?

I would say checking the actuator is definitely worth a go, sounds like the garage you took it to don't have a clue!

Have free'd off many actuators over the years.

Best get to it ASAP to prevent the motor burning itself out Thumbs Up

And once you have freed it off, the ESF goes away and you've narrowed it down to the actuator rod, get D-M (above) to change it for you! Thumbs Up

And don't remove the battery tray, just put the car in extended mode and remove the small heat-shield from under the wheel arch then dowse the linkage in WD40, its also best to have a welding rod or coat hanger so you can work the linkage back & forth to help free it off.

Flack Thumbs Up

Bottom of page one is the guide I wrote to make it easier for others to free up theirs.

Much easier to go in from the top, more access.

Rest well old friend, your work is done.

Cheers for the replies.

I popped back and spoke to the guy that had looked at my D3, he didn't give me the code but said its the actuator. I mentioned freeing it which he said he had never heard of or tried but admitted it was worth a go.

I mentioned the actuator link repair and again he said cannot be done on the car, said turbo must come off and said diff and exhaust have to come off to access it.

I would love to get DM to change it but I'm certain East Yorkshire is a bit far for him!

My plan is to start after work tomorrow, I will let you know how I get along.

Hi all

Well I've located the actuator link rod, sprayed liberally in WD40, fashioned a hook from a coat hanger. I found mine pushes down easily but seems to be sticking coming back up towards the upper end of its range. Moving it back and forth I think it is moving a bit more freely. I hope this solves the issues with my D3.
