Been listed on there ages, it's the advert at normal price, not a particular bargain I'd have said.

Obviously does a fair job with 100% feedback so not knocking that, difficult to compete with someone selling from home but I can supply a recon unit for that sort of money, just need to know that there is a demand for it and I will stock it. (will not come with my 2 year warranty though!)

I think that is the point. These are a bargain @ £140 but the guy clearly works from home if you google streetview the address.

So anything from any company would be equal wouldn't it?

The Alternator is not very high tech and has the usual bundle of bits that any unit does, so is the unit just repaired, replacing the dead things on the day or does it have a standard set of parts fitted to it to call it reconditioned? Most reconditioners reuse many parts I would like to see replaced.

What I can say for sure is about a year ago we scaled back our use of reconditioned units opting for new, not just the Denso for Land Rover but many other cars and we have seen our warranty claims drop to virtually zero.

I would fit a recon to mine and did! I am in the trade I understand it's luck of the draw, it's also less of a big deal for me if mine fails. Earlier this year Geoff was doing my phone upgrade to a D4 kit and he was having problems with the software update, on checking my alternator output he discovered is was not putting out quite enough although I had no other issues. I have a new Denso unit on now!

Agree about the uncertainties of 'reconditioned'

We run a fleet of boats and have at least 2 alternators fail each year. If you think LR parts are expensive, try a 'marinised' one - which seems to be little more than a coat of green paint - they start at over £800 for a bog standard Denso or Bosch unit.

Consequentially we use a local(ish) company who turn them around for the same day for £69 each - irrespective of type. At this price we keep a couple in stock to reduce down time, but I know that they are rarely reconditioned, just have the font and rear ends replaced in most cases. However, at present the boat electrics are much simpler than those in a D3 or D4 (mainly 'cos they have much larger battery banks), and we have smart chargers fitted in line to improve the charging cycle.

At the end of the day, and as with most things in life, you get what you pay for....

I've just replaced mine on Friday with a reconditioned unit from a local indepedant , it cost £160, with handing over the old one, which I did as I was needing the car in a hurry and he was the only local place with one on the shelf , but another place in Coventry said they would recon mine for £130, if I wasn't in a rush.
Both places give a guarantee , it just took a bit of googling and phone calls
