On my way to work, I pulled away from a traffic light and noticed I was down on power, looked out the rear and couldn't see anything behind me but thick grey smoke. The check engine light flashed for a bit as well. I let off on the gas and the smoke went away. Figured it might have been a fluke, reminded myself I needed to book it in to get the plugs changed, and kept going. Merged onto the highway and again, thick grey smoke and reduced power when I pushed the gas. No flashing CEL this time though. From there it got progressively worse to the point where I could only do about 30mph on the highway or it would just dump smoke like crazy. Even minor throttle would make it smoke. I barely managed to get it to my mechanic and they are taking a look today.
Am I going to need a new engine? Fingers crossed for a simple fix.
Plugs are original as far as I know, 94k miles. 4.4L V8.

Shop called me back saying it was just the PCV valve and should be up and running again in no time. I was so relieved. Then they called back later saying they heard an engine noise on the test drive and were going to look into it. Just called me back again saying they think a connecting rod has gone.
Could the PCV valve going bad have had anything to do with this?

I believe its a common problem on the v8
I had 2 bmw 645 v8s that had valve wear
The pcv valve also fails on them often
Mine blew smoke after idling at the lights a few minutes as the oil got past the guides into the cylinder
I sold mine before it got wirse as its a big and expensive job
They also have a water pipe in the middle of the block which fails and causes leaking, if its the same engine get this done at the same time ....................................................................................................
If my wife ever sells my stuff for what she thinks I paid for them, you lot are gonna get some bargains!
