stop start 2014 D4

I have a little bit of a weird problem. The stop start in my new (to me) D4 isn't really playing ball. At least I don't think it is. It doesn't do it first thing in the morning, I guess that is because its cold? when it warms it sometimes does it. I've been keeping my eye on it over the last few days, and it seems to do it when it wants to? Sometimes it will stop and others it won't at traffic lights, stopped for about 2 minutes. Today it stopped at lights but then came back on again after around 10 seconds. Yes I still had my foot on the brake! I'm just wondering if I am not understanding how it works - or have I got a problem I should deal with under warranty? Might be battery related?

Try charging your battery and try it again.

The battery is probably not holding a charge as suggested by philm Thumbs Up

I'm happy that the stop/start doesn't work, but if you want it to work, and have to charge it regularly then if you have a warranty use it.

Stop/Start will only work if:
Outside air temperature is above freezing and below 40 degrees
Engine is at normal operating temperature
Battery is fully charged
Current drain on battery (radio, heating etc) is not excesssive.

There are other factors but those are the main ones from memory.

Cutting out and then restarting at lights is quite common if one of the facotrs above is in play.

How old is the battery, if it's the original then it's probably in need of replacement.

It might be the original I guess - its a 2014 land rover approved one I have only just bought a week ago. i would of thought that would of been picked up on there checks - maybe not.

Wishful thinking to think a stop/start issue will be picked up on pre-delivery.

If you've only had it a week take it back to the Dealer and tell them to fix the problem at their cost.

don't really want to drive down to Kent again to sort that. I should be able to use any Land Rover dealer I think - so will ring the local nottingham one on monday. Services were closed at 1 today when I called earlier. hopefully they can fix it. saves some fuel

If you need to charge the main battery (which is possibly the cause with people doing fewer miles at present) the main battery is on the passenger side under a large plastic cover which just clips off. This is located at the back of the engine compartment (nearest windscreen). Take the plastic cover off (3 clips) and connect your battery charger to the + terminal and a good earth (I use a nut connected to the wing). Alternatively you can connect via the tow electrics socket with the right fitting (available for sale on this forum I believe).
The stop /start is often temperamental at the best of times , and having things like heated seats on as well as other factors will stop it kicking in. One of the biggest factors is your battery condition as has been stated. If the car still has the original battery, then, quite soon, even with a full charge, stop/start will cease to work. Mine did this after 4 1/2 years, which is quite good compared with many others.
As has been said, your new car shouldn't be doing this, so make it the sellers (or dealers) issue if you can and get it sorted. Get them to test the battery and tell you the results. That may force the issue, and you may end up with a new battery under your warranty.
Good luck
 Gary

Since I bought a new Exide battery for my 2014 and reset the BMS the start stop works perfectly. (Non existent before).

The battery was 124 from Amazon... cheaper than Tayna oddly as it came from them via Amazon!

I really like the way that when the stop has activated and you remove your seat belt the car turns off fully and selects park. Cool feature! No other car I’ve had does that.

To answer your question simply.... your start stop is hugely dependent on battery state. It’s an ear;y warning that yours is ready to be replaced.
A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Make sure both batteries are fully charged (main & aux) and holding charge. Then you'll need to update/recalibrate the system via the OBD port 'battery replacement' setting for both batteries.

when I bought my D4 from a dealer on the South Coast I had the exact same issue - in my case after 2 weeks of use, never once did the stop start cut the engine out.

In the end the dealer which supplied it agreed to pay for a new main battery - but the local dealer fitted it on their behalf.

A word of warning though, even for them to look at it under warranty you will have to agree to pay £180 per hour - and only if they decide that warranty covers it will you get this diagnosis for free.

If yours does stop / start occasionally then it wouldnt surprise me to see them try to wriggle out of it.

Probably cheaper and less hassle to just bite the bullet and buy a new battery.

Also I would add, my D4 stop start does now work but it doesnt happen as often as most other cars I have driven, probably as there is so much power demand from various things on such a complex vehicle. My wifes Merc B class cuts out every time I stop - but my D4 probably only about 1 time in 7 or 8 depending on the journey.
