Success!!

Job done Very Happy

Took a lot longer than I hoped but then I was working in my warehouse and not my own garage (due to being filled with stuff for my extension).

Thanks Mike for the tip with the chisel; taped one to my breaker bar to get the reach and hammered away, soon broke it free. Thumbs Up

I've done my lower column now as well. I think the left hand drive model is just a litte bit more challanging. Getting the old one out was a tight squeze and the getting to the lower bolt was hard. It took me about 2.5 hours.

The funny thing is that the old one didn't feel bad at all after removing it. The joint was moving smoothly and I coundn't detect the play. I even put it in a vice and tried to feel the play witha spanner. The only thing moving was the vice Smile

But I can feel the difference of the new one when driving. No play in the steering and no clonking over rough stuff.

Did this job yesterday evening. As I have a LHD I did it as Xrover1 describes it. Not really dificult or even tight even though I have big hands. It was a bit fiddly to remove the old column and get the new one in place but with some patiance it was ok. I was in a hurry (Football U21 finals with Sweden in it...)which didn´t really help. I think my old column was ok but the lower bolt was actually loose. Steering is now much improved. It will be even better this afternon when I change my worn Goodyears for new Scorpion ATR´s.

Thanks for the guide!

Did my lower steering column yesterday. Didn't have to remove anything around the battery case to reach the top bolt, just a really long socket extension. I used a telescoping magnet to catch the loose bolt as I removed it, put it in the same way. So glad I was able to do this myself as my shop wanted about $300 for the job (not including the part).

My u-joint was so seized up I could hardly bend it in one direction. Nice to have smooth steering again! Having my skid plate removed gave me the opportunity to hit the car wash and clean the lower radiator area that was packed up with dirt as well as other areas under the engine.

Feeling a sense of accomplishment this weekend!

Morning to this brilliant forum again... i love this place for help n guidance. After reading this post i think my problem is this. Sometimes not all the time its a little notchy and when revereing off my drive with steering full left lock its clonks with the feeling to my hands. Then last night i pulled out of the petrol garage on same lock but going foward, it felt like i had no power sterring at all so once i straightend her up it was fine. Any idea people. I start a new job tomorrow so wanted to look this afternoon. Thanks

Another thumbs up for the write-up thanks!... did my column today in an hour with the help of a print-out Thumbs Up I think I was lucky though, mine came off the top end easily just with a light pull.

My old one was totally siezed in one plane, but oddly nice and free in the other. Bought replacement from my local LR Indy who said they'd never replaced one, which made me a bit doubtful about the cause of the notchyness and lack of self-centreing... but it was indeed the issue- now it's lovely and light and precise.

Another notch on this forum's bed post.. thanks all

Did this last week with help from Iain's great guide Thumbs Up

Only slight variation is that I had to turn the wheel from the 12 o'clock position to align the lower bolt head (the E10 one) so I had access for the socket - it was pointing inwards at 12.

Otherwise, all good Thumbs Up

Just done this myself after a few intermittent stiff steering moments... Censored to park !
Stripped out shaft on Tuesday, UJ was slightly stiff in one direction. Ordered new from Dan at Duckworths
Fitted today.
All in all quite straight forward, all bolts undid easily. Found I needed to fit top bolt first so that I could push shaft up to align threads
Also the head bottom bolt (torx ) wasn't where I expected it to be with steering wheel straight and top bolt visible, it was pointing inwards - as per Martin I would guess. So dropped the under tray and found could get at it easily (didn't add much time - extra axle stand and a few 13mm bolts)
Love this forum !

Well, what a difference 24 hours makes. On the way home from Aberystwyth today the power steering seems to have completely died. After the euphoria after changing the lower steering shaft and all seeming well, drove 20 miles today all good, parked up, went to leave, steering heavy and has remained so since. I've not yet had chance to look at anything - currently seeking solace with a glass of Malbec-
I would greatly appreciate any ideas or what to look at next

Check steering oil level. Could be a seized steering end (tie rod). You did put it all back correctly Embarassed

Having a look this morning, first on list will be to check my work. Drove for 50 miles without issue though. But I always go back to 'what has been changed/touched' as first port of call Can't see how it could be wrong though - only one way to fit it ?

Right,
Car jacked up, wheels off ground steering turns easily, no difference with engine running. no obvious tight spots. Removed bottom bolt from steering shaft and pushed off rack. UJ feels good. I feel sure that if something was tight or binding I would struggle to turn the steering or at least feel it with engine off. Really feels like no assistance at all
How can i check if pump is working? It certainly doesn't look easily accessible down there
Looking like it maybe a visit to the stealers Big Cry
