England 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Adriatic BlueDiscovery 3

Just done my lower steering column, about hour and a half, but did take the spare battery box off and the heat shield to the left of the suspension, made access to the top bolt a doddle.
When the old one came off, there didn't seem much wrong with it, but what a difference the new ones made ! Steering is noticably better and the clucking over cobbles is gone. Whole things tight as a drum.

Done this today, yet to road test but wanted to ask how tight the lower bolt needs to be - it's a right pain to tighten with the limited space - but mine never seemed to get solid so just worrying that I've either over tightened it, or crossed it.

I moved the wheel, but thought I had it back in the right place but apparently not as my steering angle sensor is out!

Is it possible to reset this without a laptop? If not guess it will be a case of bolts off.

If there is any chance that the steering wheel has moved 360 deg then you have a risk to the clockspring too. A diagnostic tool would tell you which way to turn to centre the wheel to the original position (in addition to the wheel off and window method). If the steering wheel is in the right position and the wheels are pointing forward then the keying of the lower shaft should ensure that no reset is required.

All sorted now.

Removed the top bolt, used the 4x4 info to make sure it was straight

It was 1 turn out, so hopefully no damage. All the buttons on the wheel still work fine.

One turn out is fine and top work using the 4x4 info for the answer as to which way to turn!

stevehall, the fact that you felt that the lower bolt had not tightened 'solidly' is quite worrying on such a safety critical part, are you sure the thread is not stripped or damaged ? ...... Well done for sorting the calibration out BTW.... Thumbs Up

Help, I'm stuck!!!

Ok, in the middle of doing this. Have used copious amounts of WD40, removed top and bottom bolts and managed to pull the old column out...

BUT

the column has come apart, leaving the top bit attached!!!! Censored Censored Censored

Any ideas how to get the top bit off???

I have tried just about everything but to no avail. Cant get a good enoug swing with a hammer and piece of metal through the battery box grommit, cant pull the column and cant even get enything into the split at the top to try and prise it open to loosen it!

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I guess I'm trying all I can. I have even tried heat on it today but still no luck. Car is actually stuck at work (due to being a dry place with a flat floor) so desperate to get the top part of the old column off and the new one on.

Turn the wheel until the split in the top of the shaft is visible, and give it a good whack with a hammer + chisel, to open up the gap Thumbs Up

Had to do the same with mine this morning
