Standstill question

My 2010 D4 is going from being my daily driver to being semi retired as I need something more economical, wondering if there are any ‘standstill precautions’ I should be taking? I guess I’ll use it for approximately 50 miles a month if that helps?

No ... just don't skip oil changes.

Make sure the parking brake gets operated when car is used.

Hi, having had mine sit unused for long periods over winter, I’d make sure it gets driven every few days. The rear brakes in particular don’t like to be left unused for longer periods.
As said above the EPB needs to be used too.

Put suspension down on the blocks ie access mode...leave EPB off so the shoes dont stick...drive it once a fortnite and go through all the buttons..ie low range...hill descent etc..if you dont use it you ......

Also, increase the tyre pressures to around 45psi all round to prevent flat spots forming in the tread. In the factory they increase the tyre pressures so that when they get to PDI, there's no issues.

Iv had my d4 for nearly 2 years and it gets used on average every 2 weeks, the same as pretty much every car Iv had for the past 10 years +. I always make sure it’s service on the time scale and not mileage and I maybe changed a couple of batteries over the years slightly earlier than what the car would have needed if I had used/charged them probably. But I haven’t needed to do anything different. I do use the parking brake more when I do use it and I do keep thinking about adding a charger to the tow bar as I have a power point 1m away, but everything been good.

Thanks all much appreciated, the brakes were serviced last year new rear callipers pads discs etc so hopefully not to many issues with them, I’ll look into the solar trickle charger id only thought about a ctek, is there any benefit to leaving it in neutral?
As for selling it……what could possibly replace it!!

Well I thought the replacement would be the more economical car you’re buying.

Personally, I would just not worry about the difference in fuel between the economical car and D4 as any saving is going to be swallowed by keeping the D4 and running another car.

It’s got to be nearly 1k / year just to keep the D4 sitting on your drive, excluding the new car, plus servicing both, etc. How much fuel do you think you will save?

My point is I would just keep using the D4 as the daily if you’re not prepared to sell.

If it's being used every month, I don't think this is necessary ... plus it's a PITA lowering pressure for road use then re-inflating afterwards.

If it were being left unused for 6 months, it's different.

I think the best advice on here has been "use it as your daily and don't get a 2nd car".

Unfortunately I can’t justify the £250 ish a month on diesel to keep using it as my daily drive, the fiesta (I know) should be around a third of that, it costs £20 / yr to tax and the multi car insurance is cheaper at £680 for both than what I paid for the disco alone last year and yes I’d shopped around for that!
So no change in insurance an extra £20 in tax and saving 160 ish a month in fuel will easily cover servicing costs, if you cost in purchase price (i haven’t as planned to buy my daughter a learner car anyway) i break even for a year then start to save and still have the D4 for various pursuits that it excels in!

so the maths in simple numbers ...

call it £5/gallon and 30mpg

so your £250 = 50 gallons = 1500 miles/month.

25 day month = 60 miles / day.

at that the Fiesta would be "ok", I suppose.

But if it's not a daily drive but fewer, longer drives ... I'd rather be in a Disco.
