my 62 disco has been occasionally not been recognising the smart key lately but today it wont open the car....Flat battery in the key I am assuming??
Does that mean a trip to a main dealer for battery and reprogramming or can I do that myself?

It should be fine to just swap the battery as described in the user manual since the fob is already programmed to your ECU.
For a new fob you will need a diagnostics tool.

You should get a message in the Centre Information Screen if the battery is getting low.

Not necessarily, I had that one time and left me stranded at the side of the road. I forget the reason they told me but a hard reset sorted it out.
If its not recognised hold the smart key under the steering column where the lock would be (you should be able to feel a few raised bits of plastic).
