| Service required but service not due yet?? |

Morning, so our new to us 2015 D4 has flashed up service required a couple of times in the month we've owned it. However it was serviced back in July this year and only covered 5500 miles since. I'm wondering if they just didn't reset the service indicator or that I'm missing something. It doesn't stay on and has only appeared a few times. It says in the handbook if a service is required it will come up with time or distance to next service but neither of these are in the service menu. Any ideas? Thanks

This might be oil dilution due to incomplete DPF regens.

I have read about that, I've vacuumed out 100ml this morning and it doesn't smell of diesel, but I don't know another way of checking. I assume an oil change ASAP is needed, which I was going to do soon anyway as a half way between services job.

If your car was registered after June 2015 and a Adblue version then it may well be oil dilution. These seem to be more prone to it. This occurs more after you do more short journeys. It doesn’t really matter what the mileage you have done.
In my experience the service required message always has a ‘in xxx miles’. It normally starts showing up at about 1500 before it recons it’s due. The service menu doesn't have any option to view distance to next service unfortunately, but it does enable you to view oil level which can show overfilled when oil dilution occurs (perhaps not if you’ve taken 100ml out.
If you have an IID tool or similar then you can check the oil dilution percentage the car thinks it has .around 6.5% kicks this off. Gary

Yes ours is a December 2015, we don't have an iid yet! Next on the shopping list!
Would you say in that case as I can't check the dilution an oil change would be a wise decision? I checked the oil just under a week ago and was on full but not overfilled, since then we've done a 200 mile round trip this week, like you say now I've taken some out it may not say it anyway. Would I be able to smell diesel? But at 6ish % would i anyway?

It is possible it's a service reset issue. They do occur apparently. . I haven't smelt diesel in the oil when this occurs and the oil generally looks thin , black and horrible anyway.
Hard to say whether you need an oil change so soon after the last service (4m from what you've said). I think if you're in doubt and capable of doing an oil service it would be worth doing in my opinion.
A lot of people on here use the suction method rather than dropping the oil iout the sump. It's much easier if you have the equipment..

Thanks for your help this morning, I was going to do an intermediate oil change anyway before this came up. So will just get some ordered this week and get it done. I have access to an oil vacuum so will do it that way, I've read that this is easier and cleaner.

It happened on both of my EU6 D4’s, despite being driven on long journeys every week.
My thoughts are that all AdBlu engines in JLR vehicles need an oil and filter change every 6k miles or less.
I use oil from Smith and Allan, which is very competitively priced.

Ok, yes I think that's wise. It's worth doing a filter change too.
Going forward I would work on the basis of a second oil change every year, esp if you are doing shorter journeys where the extra diesel used to burn off the DPF is not all burnt because the regen cycle doesn't complete.
Remember, the car will still call for a service after the oil change if you don't have means to reset it.

Oil and filter change this morning. Vacuum oil change, what a game changer, never done one before, so much quicker, easier and cleaner. Will continue to do an intermediate oil change from now on. Thanks for your help 👍

Morning, so this has popped up again, done just over 1k miles on fresh oil. Surely it doesn't need another oil change after that many miles. The only thing is I performed no service reset after I changed the oil. Any ideas thanks.

It just comes up with service required, as in the start of this thread. It doesn't seem to be holding a fault as no fault symbol after the service required goes out after a few seconds.

I notice you didn’t do a service reset after the oil change . As you didn’t reset it, I think it could be the same message sequence counting down the miles. How many miles to service did it say in November, and how many is it saying now? It can take some time between this countdown and you’ve only done 1000 miles. ( message normally reads , service required in xxxx miles).
My understanding is that, without a reset, you haven’t done anything to reset the oil dilution calculation the car has.
Let us know. If you had an IID to can view the oil dilution percentage the car has calculated. Gary
