To sell or not. XXV. Advice and ideas needed!
So my OH tells me we probably need to get rid of my XXV. 4 year finance coming up.. 6 1/2 years old... 83k miles.
Part of me knows he's being sensible. This is a Disco. We've had ones for 15 years and have had the pleasurable experience of the Christmas tree dashboard, the suspension going etc, etc and the outlay of fixing . But not on this one (yet)
And this car is perfectly suited to me loading up with kids, tent, bikes, roof rack or skis and snow chains. Or collecting OH and his mates after a beer session (in normal times)
So today I looked at the Defender and drove one. It's nice enough but couldn't get comfy driving it.
Plan on taking a D5 out even though I think the boot space is titchy.
What I need to hear is how people have found life after a D4. I hate the thought And if we go for a new model then perhaps we need to pay off the balloon payment and sell privately rather than p.ex and refinance. Would this be better?

Work out the costs of the D4 balloon payment plus an aftermarket warranty to give you peace of mind. Vs a new LR.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

Pay the balloon payment and keep the D4 (or buy a newer one).
You will not find anything as good at doing everything you need it to do.
The best motor on the planet as far as Iām concerned.š“ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó “ó æ
Normally I would have changed it by now, but I cannot find a replacement, which replicates or betters this car. I agree with RonP
I have tried D5 & RRS which don't work for me. The Defender 110 is very nice, but when I specced it up I couldn't justify the price. The FFRR is probably a bit too "bling" for me - but I'm going to try one in the next couple of months,
Good luck;please keep us posted, particularly on what you get offered by WBAC & Motorway.

I went from a 2016 D4 to an XXV (2014). I missed the EU6 engine and the glorious gearbox map but Ian Bodsworth brought 95% of the gap back with a map. Enough to satisfy me.
2 and maybe one half years is quite a long time in a car model's life but I've no regrets buying an older one.
Prices for used D4s, especially XXVs are strong, even with WBAC and Dealers have offered to buy mine from me. So if you are selling, do it now/soon for max value.
Always a personal choice but if you've known the car from new (sorry, I forget the OP as I reply..) and it's still good and strong then I'd keep going personally...
EDIT... and get a warranty. I'm with Warranty Direct (the old one) but the new one seems to be covering the dreaded big engine failure, if (if) that hits you....Jim

Hello SpaceElf
I bought my XXV new 1/9/14.....loved it from Day 1 and almost shed a tear on trading it in for the New Car at end of April this year. Never have I had a car for anymore than 3 years before hand.
Why did I have it for so long??? Was obviously waiting on the Disco 5 coming out and I was expecting to just 'Trade up' and then seen it, drove it and thought it was Minging and having had all the toys in the XXV would have to have them in the new Disco 5 which was circa Ā£83,000.....So not going to spend that on something I did not like........What else did Landrover have? ? ? What about a new Defender I hear you ask??? Looked at it and could not believe the lack of space / height in the back....Mental money for equivalent spec again.....RRS Nope Too Wee and Range Rover....about to get changed and not having flexibility of seats / space as Disco4.......all of which if purchased would come with the misfortune of having to engage with the Local Dealer Network again ( Muppets!) ( Wanting to charge me Ā£200 to replace a fog light that wasn't working as an example when a Ā£3 bulb did the job....I could go on.....but won't
So Landrover has moved on and developed models that I dont want / rate / interest me....Then they have higher APR on PCP deals than the competition which makes it even more stupid to part with the cash.....and then the XXV started to need bits and bob's and off it went.
Think long and hard ...there is a lot of stuff out there that does not have a Landrover Badge on it and look at the cost of it over the period you want it....

I've been through this. I had a D3 and D4 and loved both of them. I test drove the Defender, which I though was great but the boot space, lack of seven seats and the side opening door put me off. I driven many D5s and never got on with them and the boot is not a great design.
I ended up buying a new XC90 R-Design. It has a big boot and also a good useful one when all seven seats are up. I can throw my crap in it and put my bikes on it like I did with my D3/4. Its superbly made, is extremely comfortable, really well specced, economical and I've not had one issue in the 9000 miles I've put on it. It does 90% of what my Disco did and it does it very, very well. I can't fault it.
However, I still miss my my Disco, particularly my D3. There was just something about it that LR has nor been able to replicate and nor has anyone else.
Me, I'd sell the XXV and buy a late EU6 D4 or a XC90. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT

Firstly you have to accept that currently there is no direct replacement for the D4. Nothing is such a versatile all rounder, so you will have to compromise in one or more areas.
I made a list of the features that I ideally wanted and worked out from that what I really couldnāt do without.
Everyone will have different opinions and requirements, but I wanted the comfort and upright ācommandā driving position of the D4, a split tailgate and I didnāt want to compromise much on the off road ability. I could manage with just 5 seats, but a good sized boot was essential.
I ended up selling a FFRR to myself, but it had to be a SDV8 so it had the locking rear diff and Dynamic Response as standard.
As I bought a 2.5 year old one, it cost less than my last D4 Landmark and Iām happy to use it the same as did all my Discoās. I do miss the massive boot of the D4 and the loss of storage places, but I knew I would.
The first modifications were to fit the smallest possible rims (20ā), rubber mats throughout and a full Hatchbag liner.
The comfort, huge torque and extra toys (massage seats) help make up for the compromises.
With the small rims, I donāt think it looks too bling, but each to their own etc.

Meant to address your last question around life after the D4...........If you don't have any equity in your Car remember you can get out of jail free by handing the car back to the finance company and starting again ( Look at your agreement ' You need to pay ((a) + (b) + (c) a total of X' just phone them up and tell them to pick it up...that's also part of your agreement).
No point in paying off the balloon payment unless you want to keep the car. I looked at a few websites for buying the car....Ā£5000 of difference between them.....and thought it was a good deal....Dealer matched that amount and saved me having tyres kickers around to look and try it out and waste my time....noted it was then advertised for Ā£5000 more. I looked at everything else that could tow 3500kgs (Got horses) and bought an BMW X7 on ultra low Finance PCP from BMW. Very very quickly forgot about the XXV and very happy with capability and size and comfort and performance and ......!!!

I have had several Discos up to and including a new D5 R dynamic HSE I picked up last week. The last two cars have both been D5's.
I was going to go away from a Disco this time and looked at Merc, BMW, VW and even a RR but none fitted the bill. I then looked at an XC90 T8 hybrid which looked OK initially and on paper, but I tow a large TA caravan so was a little unsure. I asked for a test drive at several dealers and even approached Volvo UK and the best I could get anywhere was 30 minutes accompanied, even Volvo UK said that was the longest they would offer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So back to LR and my normal dealer who is superb. Initially we looked at and had a Defender 110 for three days, we found it uncomfortable, enclosed and small inside and a very very small boot, on top of this to spec it to a similar level to D5 it worked out a lot more expensive.
The dealer then said they had my current one coming in as a failed order, and we loved it (will post pictures later). It is a big step up from my previous 1st Edition. Yes the boot is not as tall as a D4 and tappers in slightly at the top but it is still huge compared with most. We manage to get all our camping gear in with no problems and I know several people who even sleep in the back as they did with D4s and no issues.
Yes its not a square box like the D3/4 but it is very very good and ticks the boxes for us.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I would say stick with what you know to be good. Grass is most definitely not greener on the other side
As you can see from my history below I have take the step forward to a D5 and then having suffered the mistake for 24 months changed back to the best D4 I could find You cannot get much better spec than an XXV for spec other than perhaps a slightly newer HSE Lux but itās not worth the expense of changing in my opinion2015 D4 HSE Lux 3.0SDV6

Depends on a lot of things. There is no direct replacement for the D4 so you need to find the best alternative that suits you. We are all different.
With the introduction of the XS edition we ended up ordering a P400 110 (at 20k cheaper than the X, its somewhat competively priced and priced on par with the D5 P360 offering). I would have been happy with either but financially (to me) it made sense with Defender as I believe it will be more desirable in the future when we come to sell it.
