Roof light switch circuit

I'm rewiring my roof lights with a centre-off rocker switch and I want to run this by the experts first.

I've drawn a circuit diagram of what I intend to do (and I've attempted to reproduce it in text below). I've got a DPDT switch and I'm planning to use some standalone LEDs to indicate status.

                                               Â·
                           Main Beam on O----O ·
                                               \
                                               Â· O----O  Roof light relay
                                               Â·
         +-----------------------------------O ·
         |                                     Â·
         |                                     Â·
12v O----+                                     Â·
         |     Sidelights on O----O LED O----O ·
         |                                     \
         |                                     Â· O----O  Earth
         |                                     Â·
         +---------------O LED O-------------O ·
                                               Â·

Readable? Probably not... but I know what it's meant to mean. If I've got it right, one position will give lights on with main beam and an LED that's on when the sidelights are on (same behaviour as the LR light switch), and the other position will give lights / LED on with no conditions.

To the questions...
1) For tfc. I take it that there is a relay somewhere downstream of the switch that you'd previously fitted in my dash?
2) I've bought some LEDs that are described as 12V with resistor. I believe I can put these in circuit as described without anything else then?
3) Is there a permanent 12V somewhere in the wiring loom that goes into the standard lights switch, or do I need to take one off (for example) the permanently-on 12v outlets I have elsewhere in the front?
4) Where can I get a main beam signal from?

Should work OK Rob,
1 - yes there is!
2 - yep!
3 - Yep - it's the one on pin 11 of the switch, fuse is 10A no. 2 in the BJB
4 - from the back of a headlight, pin 10 both sides

Excellent - thanks for the info.

I've discovered that it's just possible to fit a switch in to the top-right section of the headlight switch / dash dimmer unit, with a bit of surgery. Downside is, since my investigations last night I've put the dial in the wrong way and my disco is now stuck on 'volvo mode' and the lights are on whenever the ignition is on Rolling Eyes

I also found a random wiring loom in the garage, I think it came with it ACM, and it's perfect for providing a multiplug so that it's still easy to remove / refit the right hand air vent. Thumbs Up

Will post a piccie when it's all complete. Either that or a plea for a new light switch unit from a breaking D3 Laughing

Do know why on earth you'd think I might have needed this information Whistle Embarassed Embarassed

I'm feeling quite proud... I've managed to do a job on the D3 and not screw it up royally. Only blew one fuse, everything else seems to have survived intact.

I didn't quite stump up the courage to break into the high-beam light wire. The major hurdle was getting it through to the back of the dashboard. Any chance I could ask you do do this for me 10? For the appropriate exchange of beer tokens, of course Thumbs Up

If this involves a trip to Buxton one weekend Iain, let me know, I can come down to BCB's and I'd pay you to wire my A-BAR ones in with the LR kit on the same trip Whistle Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I'll have to think of some other jobs too Very Happy There's definitely room for 4 more LF 140s along the top of that roof rack Laughing
