You'll do plenty of that! It's a 300mb download I think. My laptop always has traces of copper grease....

@kajtzu

I fitted the Meyle 4 year warranty uprated arms last year and the ride is harder. Most noticeable with my 20 inch summer wheels which I plan to swap for 19s or 18s for this reason. BF Goodrich 262-70-17s moderate the harder ride but not completely.

However so far as the lower arms are concerned condition-wise I have no problems. I have done no serious offroading however.

Hey, Mek. Thanks for taking the time to report in Thumbs Up I’m not sure what I’m going to replace the front LCAs with - Meyle HD like you or genuine bushes. Not a thing I need to do right now, though. I’ve got 19” 255/55R19.

PRO Job 1: change both drivebelts and aux belt

An easy one for me to tick off, I just dropped it to the Indy and grabbed a cup of coffee!!

It went in to Rovertune in Reading today for both belts and the aux belt. £508 later and 4 hours, ready to collect. They specifically advised AGAINST doing the oil cover on my 2005 model and gave assurance over doing hundreds of belt changes without issue. Fingers crossed my trust in them serves me well!

I have no idea when the belts were last done (I’ve owned the car for a month but it came with no receipts). The two drive belts looked okay actually but the aux one was brittle and cracking so I’m pleased I had them done.

Today was my first reasonable distance journey in the D3 at 89 miles mostly motorway. Averaged 59mph including the traffic on the M32 and got 33mpg on the dash. Not bad but when I’ve sorted the dodgy torque converter, changed the oil and all filters, replaced the MAF and MAP sensors and put new rubber on the wheels, I am sure I can improve on that. Hoping to get 35+ mpg and maybe 38 mpg once that’s all sorted. We’ll see!

Otherwise the car ran okay, the torque converter is clearly rubbish as it was hunting revs all the way except on perfect level ground at 70.

During the journey I have noticed a few other niggles to add to the list of DIY jobs:

the cruise has stopped working (since I did the battery swap)
There is a missing decorative bung on the side of the passenger seat
The suspension seems to sit lower on the drivers side
The tracking is marginally out (should sort itself maybe with new rubber and rebalanced wheels)

They would have looked at it and see its the type that dont fail. The casting is different from 2007 models, as far as I understand.

Cheers for the feedback. I might give those poly bushes a second thought then...!

I have a 2005 HSE on 19 inch with genuine polybush bushes on the bottom front arms. The ride is not harsh, but unless the alignment is *perfect* it will have a tendency to follow truck grooves on the motorway. Otherwise, just fine after three years of use.
Have to say, nice, organised work on your starship, keep it up and us posted!I have the dreaded passenger side sunroof tube to do soon too...

PRO Job 3: New torque converter

I’ve picked up my D3 from Bristol Transmissions on Friday morning. £1499 later and with a new Torque Converter, fluids, filter and a new sump, with a 12 month (12,000 mile) warranty.

I was suffering two main symptoms, both of which I noticed as soon as I picked up the car after winning the auction. Firstly the revs rose too high when accelerating and secondly the revs bounced up and down (by about 250 rpm) when cruising at about 1750 rpm. Both lead to a suspected Torque Converter failure.

Bristol Transmission took the car on Tuesday two weeks ago and road tested it, suspected the TC main bearing was shot. Left it with them. Two days later they’ve tested the fluids (no contamination thankfully so no suspected leaks or water ingress) and they have tested the gearbox itself (no replacement needed thankfully) so advised just the TC change. Took a week and I collected it on Friday. Delighted with the service and now I have 12,000 miles of warranty freedom on the TC and gearbox setup.

Their initial road test diagnosis was spot on - the bearing was shot. Thankfully it had not damaged the gearbox so I caught it early enough. They’ve advised box fluid flushing every 60,000 miles so I’m going to put that on my schedule. Hopefully with proper care the TC won’t fail again.

The journey down to Exeter from Bristol and then back to Hampshire was great, lovely smooth gear changes and cruising nicely with no more bouncing revs.

Happy man now, albeit a slightly poorer one!

DIY Job 5: Replace sidelight bulbs

An easy job made a little hard... I bought some LED sidelight bulbs from Halfords to replace the one broken and one working sidelight bulb. £15.00.

The headlight units is held in by the two sliding clips either side of the rear of the unit. Simply lift these and the headlight unit comes out in one go, except for the fact that my clips were tight beyond tight, so much so that I would have believed you if you’d have said that someone had welded them in place. Goodness knows how long it has been since they were last used. Thankfully half a can of WD40 later and some encouragement courtesy of a pair of pliers and they are now free and moving freely.

A quick word of warning for anyone who has not done them before - when pulling the clips upwards, do not pull them all the way. They need to be pulled upwards to line up with the clips mounted on the engine bay frame. If you pull too far they lock still. It’ll be obvious when you do it, and when you see it.

Both bulbs changed now and the LED bulbs give a lovely clean light, a much better match for the Xenon headlights as they are far less yellow than the cheaper halogen sidelights.

DIY Job 7: Replace windscreen wipers

Another five minute job, using the Halfords front ones and Bosch rear (I couldn’t find a set of three, oddly!). They came off easily once I fully understood the simple clips holding them in. Now I have a much improved view in the rain.

The rear one that came off was in a terrible state, the rubber was so brittle that it disintegrated whilst removing it. Well overdue.

Pro Job 7: air con re-gas

The sudden heatwave over the bank holiday highlighted just how terrible the air con was performing. Hardly anything cold at all even at full blast. I dropped it into the local Ford dealer today who tested for leaks and then re-gassed it for me. £75.00 later and my air con now runs like a fridge. Yummy. Bring on the summer.

DIY Job 31: add facelift D4 rear lights

An easy job, two screws on each light housing and then they pop out. The look connector was a little hard to get off (probably hasn’t been removed in 14 years!) but got it off in the end.

I went for the red LED cluster from the MY2010 (I think) which I much prefer over the darker smoked/black ones. The update from the old D3 ones make the rear end so much fresher. These were £125.00 from a forum member and include the NAS spec side red repeater and had the resistor already attached to stop the indicators flashing too fast.

PRO JOB 4: powder coat the wheels

Slight change of plan! Looking at the costs of powder-coating the wheels and coupling with the fact that my tyres are nearing their legal limit, I decided that it might be cheaper to keep my eyes open for a decent set of second hand wheels and tyres instead.

Delighted that these popped up on fleabay last weekend, got them for £401.00 and just a few miles from my office. They are utterly mint and with good tyres, they look nearly new. A great saving on sorting out my old set.

Total cost was £453.00 being £401.00 for the wheels and £52.00 to have them re-balanced and swapped onto the car.

I much prefer these later multi-spoke wheels. Coupled with the D4 rear lights they make it look much younger and fresher. Cosmetically, next up will be a new later grill and de-tango the front lights and side repeaters.

My old D3 HSE wheels are up for sale on the forum, check out my ad in the For Sale section.
