A pillar trim spongy bit

Took my A pillar trims off today to replace the clips that weren’t the best after having water coming in through the A pillar air bag area , At the bottom of the pillar trim is a spongey piece of material that was soaked, What’s the purpose of this? I would think it better for the water to just run off the car down some drain area rather then have this spongy material holding water and sitting against the posts soaking wet or is it just mine that’s leaking down to this material and shouldn’t be?

I think it is for noise reduction to stop wind whistling up the trims?

Thanks TyTy , sounds like a good reason for it , Don’t think they are supposed to get so wet though, Seems hard to get the trims to re fit perfectly and rain proof Rolling Eyes
