For what it's worth, my front and rear PDC has been playing up since I took delivery in October (high pitched flat tone and flashing switch whenever it tries to activate). Changed the ECU but still not right, it's going in next week for a new PDC wiring harness 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

I had the same problem with mine back in November - High pitched tone and flashing switch. Eventually traced to a faulty sensor in the rear bumper, now replaced and both front and rear sensors working fine now. I believe it was the second sensor from the left (passenger side).1996 Discovery 1 300TDI ES Biarritz Blue, sold

I get a seemingly intermittant fault with the rear PDC, when I select reverse for the 1st time on a run out, the beep doesnt happen and PDC doesnt engage, however if I stop reversing put it in neutral then reverse again, it comes on, Strange,
going to main dealers this week see what they say.

Sounds like you want the fix described in TSB LA413-001V2 applied, I had this done ages ago and it's a definite improvement
Subject/Concern: Discovery 3/LR3 - Parking Distance System Intermittent Operation
Summary: A customer may report a concern that the parking aid system does not operate every time when reversing.
Cause: The parking aid system needs to receive both 'vehicle stationary' and 'electronic parking brake' (EPB) signals together to activate the system. The system has now been changed so that the 'vehicle stationary' signal is ignored and EPB 'drive away' signal can activate the system.
Action: On a customer complaint basis only, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to renew the parking aid control module. The End

I had mine fixed this week, been fine since. Its a bit worrying the first few times it doesnt kick in as you could easily do some damage. The trick is listen for the beep when selecting reverse if it beeps it will work if it doesn't put in Neautral and Reverse again it will then kick in.
Havnt had to worry since the repair.

My first glich. Rear PDC started to fail today... stick it in R start to move and get a continuous long beep... but nothing is there.
will clean the sensors in the morn, but otherwise, its back to the dealer. It's only 3 months old.
Other than that I LOVE my disco

Probably general winter grime and road salt contaminating the sensors, not unique to the Disco3, just the way it is
Try leaving in reverse for few mins, the ultrasonics are self-cleaning to a point although running a hose across them will help

Ultrasonic sensors used in PDC systems are generally both transmit and receive (activate ultrasonic pulse for Xms then switch to receive for Yms). I think cheaper ones may have a dedicated transmitter and multiple receivers. The ultrasonic pulse is by definition a physical resonance on the surface of the sensor and as such may cause looser surface debris to fall off. I'm no expert, but given a resultant more uniform surface, the sensor may then perform better. A hosepipe or a damp rag would certainly be much more effective
I picked up my trusty bible while trying to answer this question. It didn't have the answer but there's a wealth of information that I know most forum users would be like pigs in with. The Bosch Automotive Handbook (now 7th edition) is the best general reference text on automotive engineering, covering nearly every topic imaginable in some level of detail. Many of the sections take the form of a design for a particular vehicle component and go into reasonably deep technical detail including some equations. It's really useful for understanding how things work and although I've not seen the 7th edition, it's usually surprisngly up to date. If you don't want to shell out for the latest version, older ones can be picked up for next to nowt.'08 LR3 V8 SE in Stornoway Gray, Alpaca interior. Xenons, Cold Weather Pack, Bluetooth & Sirius. I hope you enjoy it I didn't know there was a CD version. Just the fact it has a search function is good enough reason to get it. The book is fairly well organised but there is plenty of crossover and some terms used that even automotive engineers don't use all the time, so searching on related terms will be great.'08 LR3 V8 SE in Stornoway Gray, Alpaca interior.
