| Pads, sensors and warning lights |

Hi
I took my D4 to be MOT'd last year at the local garage and was told it would fail on its pads so I asked them to fit new ones and thought nothing of it
5,000 miles later I get a warning light for pad wear around the time its due a service at my LR indie
Theyve just commented that when the lads were changed the garage only fitted one new wear sensor which explains the light
Before I go back can anyone help with the following please:
Do you routinely fit new sensors to the D4 at pad change time or just reset the old one?
If I got 5,000 miles before the wear sensor came on does this mean the pads likely had 5k miles left when down to "MOT failure" level?

As I understand it the sensors only need changing if the pads are at the limit and the warning light come on. If they are changed before this the sensors are ok and do not need replacing

You either have a binding caliper, or they didn't change the pads at all. 
As said, if the light was not on there was no need to replace the sensor. So the rear sensor they allegedly changed was not required either. Dennis

The sensors (1 Front & 1 Rear) clip into the pads and project a couple of mm towards the discs.
When they hit the disc they wear through & that is what makes the light come on.
The only way to turn the light off is to replace the offending sensor with a new one.
I have replaced pads 2 times on my D3 & once on my D4 and never replaced a sensor as I have always replaced the pads just before the sensor wears through
So, the options are :
1. They never replaced the pads
2. They replaced fronts & rears have now gone (probably more likely ).. or other way round
3. Sensor was fitted incorrectly and has hit the disc (unlikely as they will only clip in one way)
MOT wise I think the limit is 1.5mm min thickness or something like that> I am not sure at what point the sensor would wear through but suspect it is about this limit. So I would say .. no light = no fail , but guess that one is open for debate Cheers Ian

But Im not sure Im any the wiser as to if he can be trusted or not........
The garage is my local spanner man I use for odds and ends, plus MOT's
Ive had a couple of niggles with him before so the seeds of uncertainty have been sown
The worn out discs looks debatable at best however its the sensor I cant get my head round
Facts are:
Pads were replaced before warning lights came on
At this time he fitted a new rear sensor but not front - no idea why he did this, he says he cant remember
5,000 miles later I get a warning light due to front sensor firing
Pads were new all round - it was the first thing I checked 
The most obvious thing for me is that he refitted the front sensor incorrectly
I understand how it works and cant see that it would "just fail" as he says it did

Based on what you have said it looks like he must have fitted it incorrectly. They work as a 'closed' circuit so any fault on the length of the sensor ( they plug in right up under wheel arch liner) would cause light to come on.
The other option is that he did not plug it in correctly and it worked loose as the plugs are an absolute  to get to!!
