Navtool install

I have just finished installing a Navtool CarPlay unit in my d3.
The unit is falsely advertised as plug n play but in reality requires hacking into the harness to get it installed. I made up a harness to avoid cutting any wires.

In general the functionality is not bad at all.
It’s a genuine upgrade and works ok.

I’m trying to work out if I can remove the nav DVD unit and still have this working.
Customer support is absolutely terrible and cannot answer any simple questions.

Has anyone installed one? And have you managed to remove the DVD unit?

you should be able to remove the nav drive.

Try unplugging the large connector (move the arm out)

When I unplug the nav unit then the CarPlay unit stops working when the car is started again.
But I get the feeling there will be a way to make this work. Anyone managed to do it.
It feels like maybe the dip switches or can bus settings should be able to make it work.

Out of interest do you have the install instructions?

I'm planning on picking one up, but want to see some more details.

Also can you share what wasn't plug and play?

Do you have any pictures mid install?

They have a YouTube video showing the install.
This is the only instructions they provide.
Search for “LR3 Navtool CarPlay install”

What I did is buy some additional gvif cables from here:
https://car-solutions.com/en/cable-for-lan...interface/

This can be used to avoid cutting the gvif cable.
I then opened up the connector to the dvd unit and de-pinned the 4 required wires and inserted 4 of my own to avoid cutting any wires in the harness.

Overall I’m pretty happy with it. But I think the product details are lacking and the customer service is pretty poor.

There is another similar product called naviplus that might be worth looking at.

However I can’t say for certain if it’s better.
Would be good if someone else could weigh in on that product.

Exactly! But it says it comes with plug n play harness which is lies.
I did not cut any wires to install it. But I had to work all that out myself.

The other thing it says is that you can replace a broken nav dvd unit.
But this is not true. You need a fully working nav system for this to work.
You cannot replace an existing nav dvd unit.

So the nav unit needs to stay? I was planning to lose that...

I have now spent a few weeks with this unit.
It works reasonably well. There is the odd hiccup that requires unplugging and replugging the phone to resolve. This is rare so no big deal and maybe this will be resolved by a software update.
The screen response is poor but that is to be expected and is manageable. For example you can’t scroll anything very easily.

Overall I’m happy.

I would like to figure out if it’s possible to remove the nav unit.
I tried updating my CCF to tell the car that the nav is not installed but I couldn’t see any change in behaviour.

If anyone knows how this could be achieved I’d appreciate the help.
If anyone has any questions or wants any specifics, let me know.

I like the idea of this too. Checked out their website and watched some YouTube video's. I don't mind hacking the loom.
They sell two options with or without car play I assume you went for the one with.

What did it cost you with shipping and import duty?

I might be inclined to go for the cheaper unit but don't know if the touch screen would work with the mirrored phone.

Nice to have a hdmi in on an old system even if the quality is not perfect. Plus you get the option for upto 4 analogue camera's.

Love the video, especially when he’s trust and taping the connections to the dvd, says to tape it (I cringe) then says that he prefers to use.....(“connectors, connector?”)....good quality tape! Makes me wonder about the quality of the connections inside the display Smile

Question

If you received a call, can you answer it using the phone buttons on the steering wheel or do you have to reach to the screen?

Would be cheaper and easier to get one of the units off Aliexpress, at least they are true plug n play and just loop into your aux harness.

I don't think there is. The Nav unit talks to the display on a custom "internal" CAN bus in addition to the GVIF link. When the screen can't talk to the Nav it assumes it's not there and prevents switching to it.

I've just installed a NaviPlus unit (GVIF + Netplay box) which works nicely and seems to remember where it was all switched to, so I don't have to manually punch it up every time I start the car. On The NaviPlus unit, you need to tap the "internal" CAN bus, and it uses that to know whether to switch the LVDS and touch to the GVIF or Nav/Internal screen.

I couldn't use one of those Android screens without losing the RSE, TV, DVD and 4x4 info so I went with the add-on, but it has come up a treat.
