Named drivers

Hi ,

Been trying to find a definitive answer please, Basically if my son can drive my D3

He’s 28 and had his licence 7 x years , he's got his own vehicle and policy , does say on his policy he can drive any other vehicle third party

But can’t find that on my policy , Just so on a day out we can share the driving

Wondering if anyone happens to have noticed it on the A Plan policy please

Thks so much as always in advance Bow down Whistle Hi

Gary

I was insured with Ageas via Aplan, couldn’t drive any other vehicle, previous insurer Admiral, couldn’t drive any other vehicle, it’s getting common now. Current insurer Direct Line, at the start of the quote I could drive any other vehicle but as soon as I declared my occupation (Transport Company) they revoked the option, just in case I was asked to drive company vehicle that wasn’t insured was the answer Confused

As I understand it;

He can drive your car om his insurance but any claim will be limited to third party claims only.

As he is not named on your policy you will be unable to claim on your insurance for any claim whilst he is driving.

Easier to stick him on your policy as a named driver, probably won't cost anything other than an admin fee

I would certainly check out the cost of the above suggestion in the first instance. 👍

I’ve just added my 27 year old son to my A Plan policy on my Defender TD5. I think it’s Ageas that provide the policy.

Without my son it was going to be about £260, with him named it was £720 😮

Quite a hike, but he doesn’t have his own policy, and despite having a full license since he was 18, has not had his own car or insurance since he was 20. So no worthwhile driving record to go by.

Meant to add, it’s still cheaper than him buying his own car and insuring it himself.

If he has 3rd party on any vehicle then perfectly legal for him to.drive your car.

Only issue if you have a accident then your damage will not be covered

Thks as always for the great advice Thumbs Up

Indeed will make contact with A plan to see what costs are involved

It’s the third party situation that would worry me the most , so I assume having him as a named driver the cover would be fully comp

Apologises asking the daft questions

Thks again and will let u know what kind of increase it will be

Bow down

I’m also with Ageas via APlan and due to once again having to surrender my licence, tried to add two named drivers (in addition to the two already listed), one was fine and as it turned out no premium increase, just a £30 admin fee, but as the other was under 35 I couldn’t add the second person.

I also couldn’t insure the car elsewhere (so I was told), to get around the problem, as I am again a non-driving policy holder, which seems is going to cause issues, especially as I was then questioned over which named driver would be the main driver etc etc it gave me a headache and I gave up.

Don’t you just love insurance Rolling Eyes
 Andy
