How old is the D3? A crank failure is normally terminal for the engine, on a D3 its normally caused by a oil pump failure or rarely a spun bearing.
I cant say that it doesnt happen just fo a quick search on the forum but please bear in mind that normally people only post on the forum when they have issue there a thousands of other members out there that never have a problem and not all owners are a member of the forum.
125k would be classed as low mileage so i think you will be safe if all the services have been carried out on time and any preventative measures carried out like replacing the oil pump if required.
Its also been said many times before dont over spend on the vehicle keep some money set aside for any problems.
These vehicles are expensive to repair, i have just had to replace my alternator and the parts alone cost £200 which is a lot more than i normally pay for one. The last one i bought for another vehicle was only £134 but luckily i can do tge repairs myself so the labour was free. Andrew

My first D3, an S manual, 55 plate is still running around with 156k miles at last mot.

Had my java black S now since Jan 2020 it had 81k on the clock its now on 99k. 105k service was done at 79k but I am going to have it done next month again.
Been serviced 4 times since I have had and I have sorted the following:-
front wheel bearings
Front and rear pads
EGR blank and software patch
Gearbox oil change
diff oils change
Alternator change
Compressor change
front air valve block change
EPB service
Its been treated to both BG and Team ZX1 products, it had factory fitted ICE and cold pack options as well as the window tints when new
I have just bought 4 19" cromodora alloys for it ( HSE ones )
Goes really well and have recently been offered more than what I paid for it.
After plugging it in I have two faults one doesn't really matter so I believe ( some relay ) and my AC needs looking at
Absolutely love it
