Manifold failure worsened by ECU map?

When I purchased my D4 in April this year it came with a Racechip GTS Black which gave it an alleged extra 44HP but TBH, I'm not a racer so always kept it in economy mode Smile

It's always performed well although I turned it off whenever offroad as I felt it interefered with the gearing and affected when TC kicked in.

All was well until it suddenly wasn't, towing the tin tent, not going particularly hard (about 2,500 RPM) up a slight incline and the manifold went. No early warnings and down to 20MPH max pretty quickly.

After a 9-hour recovery while they found a truck big enough to carry the D4's weight and tow the 8m caravan, early diagnostics were cracked manifold.

My indie sees a lot of these with a hairline crack but mine cracked big enough for you to get your finger in it (see pic). Any evidence to suggest that messing with the mapping could cause this?

Needless to say I've had the chip removed now as I didn't see much benefit

Would be interesting to see the metal manifolds would suffer with more boost.

I think that’s a stretch. Of course the only way to come to such a conclusion would be to compare, over long term, all the empirical running evidence from the mapped and unmapped engine.

The stretch gets longer.

And to what end? Such modifications are buyer beware and without any warranty.

The fact that they fail even on a factory spec map would indicate they are close to a limit in terms of performance/longevity. Quite a few plastics deteriorate over time and these are bathed in oil fumes all their life thanks to the EGR system and suffer significant heat cycles throughout.

What warranty would apply if they were replaced on a vehicle, especially if remapped? Mine have done 7 years and could last many more. Yes cast alloy ones should last years longer but what was the engine developers ideas behind using plastic in the 1st place, cost is the most obvious but anything else?
 A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an MG5 EV

Fully agree, the only logical sense from JLR making these out of plasic is cost/ease of manufacture.

Designed to pass any JLR warranty period and then fail.

Seems to be more age related rather than mileage/heat cycle related as mine failed @ 47k miles in october 2023. Went brittle and split. No looking back since installing cast.

My main frustration is that this should be a part for life, I don't believe a rocker cover/intake manifold should be a consumable part.

I think most manufacturers are using plastics in the engine. My mates Audi Q7 3.0 diesel suffered the same. A split inlet manifold and it too was plastic.

Was wondering which ones to put in but went for OEM replacements in the end. Racechip now removed so hopefully the new manifolds will outlive me Very Happy
