Low Battery message after Ctek charge.

Not really being using the D4 since Covid.
So been keeping it on trickle charge with my ctek7 (on agm mode).
On Monday, I unplugged as mrs ronp was going to use the D4
3 miles down the road when she stopped for diesel, the 'low battery please start engine' message appeared on the dash.
I put it back on the ctek when she got home and went out to analyse it this morning: -
Ctek showed battery fully, so unplugged it.
Went into the car to remove my ctek reminder on the steering wheel and the 'low battery' message came on.
Drove to town and back (6 miles total) and the Stop Start didn't kick in as it normally would.
Back home I've just connected it back up to the ctek and the battery was reading 3/4 charged after 5 min and fully charged after 45min.

My thoughts are a duff battery, but had both batteries replaced last year and only covered around 5k since and been connected to the ctek when not in use.
Could overuse of the ctek kill the battery?

Your thoughts on what's causing this is most appreciated. Thumbs Up

Got a DS now and we have been using CTEX charger every couple of weeks for the last 2 months after low batt warnings .
I thought it was the battery as a week after fully charging the warnings reappeared , took it to dealer last week they said nothing wrong with battery .
They say its the Dash cam draining it , so I have disabled the parked recording function so it only records whilst driving .
Will see how it goes .

Although I have a single Lead Acid and not an AGM battery on my D4 (no stop-start), it sat connected to a CTEK from the beginning of lockdown and sat there for at least 4 months. It started the first time and a voltmeter reports battery volts good (stationary and running).

I also have a BMW E36 M3 that permanently lives connected to a second CTEK (like 10 months of the year) and it is always in good health. Again, lead-acid.

I am not familiar with the stop-start system - are both batteries AGM? I was just thinking if one was AGM and one was lead-acid, then the CTEK would not how to deal with both (at the same time).

What’s the actual voltage Ron? The car might be saying low battery, when it’s actually not. Mine does similar. It’s never failed to start though.

Have found before that with an external charge the BMS doesnt seem to take this in to account.

Try a Battery reset, details in Wiki Thumbs Up

Good point. I seem to remember the Battery Management System requires the battery to be charged with the negative connected to the chassis or earthing point to allow it to register it (sorry for the non engineering based explanation).
Did you charge in the this config or did you connect directly to the battery terminal?

I am aware of the battery reset procedure for the D3, here:- https://www.disco3.co.uk/wiki/Hard_Reset

They contain the words:-

Hopefully there is something for battery reset procedure for the D4 elsewhere? Failing which is the hard reset technique now fully understood?

Low batt

I get the exact same thing. Charge it up then you get a low charge start engine, I fitted a new battery, reset the count etc and I still get it. I just ignore it now.
 Discovery 4 3.0 HSE 2010 year. I like it a lot. Now with winch 😂

Have you tried charging the 2nd battery separately with the Ctek? It's not charged from the main battery when the ignition is off so that could be low if it's been standing for a while.

Can't see leaving the Ctek connected to the main battery causing a problem (unless its faulty) I have two Ctek's connected permanently to my motorbike and Disco and they're both on a time switch which comes on for about 90mins per day. My motorbike was bought new in 2000 and is only on its 2nd battery in 20 years.

Many thanks for all responses.
Doesn't seem as conclusive as I'd hoped.

Don't know the battery voltage, but would suspect it's down (due to stop/start now not operating).
Ctek is wired to + & - battery terminals, but has been for over a year now with no issues.

Now got it booked in to my local garage to investigate.

The D4 has been faultless to date, so hopefully I'll get this sorted.

I have no knowledge of the d4, but wifes car has bat in boot, but you must charge/jump start it using the under bonnet lugs, apprantely this is so the cars bat managment system knows what is going on?

+ve lead on the pos terminal -ve lead on a chassis ground.
Otherwise the BMS gets confused.

Worth chucking a Foxwell BT100 into your tool kit - a very simple battery analyser, for around £30 will tell you the condition of your battery, CCA capability etc. vs the stated capacity and tell you good/charge/replace with the numbers behind it.

I've had batteries with a good voltage but dire capacity following charging before now. You stick a volt meter on it and everything is great, but when it's under load it all starts to crumble.
 I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
