What happens now?

I hope there is someone out there that can help with my question. I have a 2005 TDV6 with 168000km on the dial. I am now going to have the BIG service done and then my baby is top tips again. Question is...... Where to from here? How do this machines age? Is it time for the tip and in with the new? I am really enjoying my car and it would be a pity but I also need to be sensible.

That service is going to cost you > R16'000.00!

Purely from a financial point of view; if you have the resourses, you may want look at trading the old bus in on something newer with a higher spec level, with a complete service history and current motor-plan - and use the R16'0000.00 to help pay for it. Having the service done beforehand will do very little for the trade-in value.

If you plan to sell it privately, spending that R16'000.00 getting the cam-belt done, will only sweeten the deal for a prospective buyer, but not much for your resale value.

I've just gone the trade-in route; my D3 had 150'000km's on the clock. The car was in very good condition and the boys at LR N1 City made me an offer I could not refuse. I picked my (pre-owned) D4 up yesterday Mr. Green

?! Is this what somebody told you that wanted to purchase your vehicle? Maybe the dealers were low on stock - that is a dealers quote of course.

Yup, it was a dealers quote, but they had no idea I planned to upgrade. The car was only ever serviced by a dealer - initially at Stellenbosch, then at N1 City. Either way, in Rand and service terms, it's a biggie and no way around it. It has to be done.

The Indies does that complete service for approx. R 7 - 9000.00.

Some guys only replace the front cambelt , the rear belt drives the diesel pump, and if it breaks(never happened to any D3 in the world, if you look at forums) there is absolutely NO engine damage.
So only do the the front cambelt at the Indies at 160 000km service , the rear belt can wait and be done later.

A well known independent in Randburg quoted me R12k for the 160k service with replacement of all the belts as well as the related pulleys - which was the same price that Waterford quoted me.

It was a no-brainer for me - go to Waterford and keep my service history with LR intact. They managed to solve my regular ENGINE FAULT problem at the same time by replacing the Fuel Temperature Sensor.

I am still walking a bit funny but it's over and done with.

Cheers
