Extended Mode

I have recently returned from a trip to Kgalagadi. The 4x4 trail between Bitterpan & Khalahari Tented Camp has become a real tester! On a sand dune (powder fine sand) about 20 meters from the top i bottomed out and the suspension went into Extended Mode. Embarassed No amount of spade work could free the vehicle, the sand just rolled back onto the wheels.

Solution...I first unpacked the vehicle(8 ammo boxes, two tents and all the other equipment. We were also 4 grownups.) I selected Access height, the wheels all rose above the sand! We then packed grass & small branches under the wheels, selected Off Road height and hey presto, the vehicle rose clear of the sand. Backed down again and had another go, solo & vehicle lighter and cleared the top.

A bit of a struggle to carry & repack the load but all worked fine. Whistle A good tip to try when all else fails in the 40 deg heat!!

Once its in extended mode - you can force it to enter "Super Extended Mode" this give an extra few cm ground clearence which can sometimes be enough to get free.

when in "extended mode" - put vehicle in Neutral, foot on brake, and press the suspension lever to raise the car.

once free the suspension will show a warning and lower to extended..

I think thats the process, its been a while since I went into super extended so may have got the "Neautral" bit wrong..

Thanks for the tip DiscoDunk. The main aim was to raise the wheels in order to put some solid material under the wheels for traction. If I had gone into the extra Super Extended mode & lifted clear, I would still not have been able to get out as the fine sand was very deep and the wheels would just have dug us deeper in.

A lot was learned by this exercise.

Did you let your tyres down to around 18psi when trying to get out or still at onroad pressures?

Tyre Pressures were 1.6 front and 1.9 at he back. Chunky 18" BF Goodrich All-Terrain tyres are fitted.

That sound's a bit hard , very hard for sand work,
safe is 1.2 , if struggles can go lower ,never go below 0.8
Used this PLENTY of times before in sand work.

Sand

I have done some sand driving at 0.8 and when the going gets tough went down to 0.6.

Also have done it to 0.6 but have seen tyres climbing off rims , or sand get's in between the tyre and rim and deflates.

Inner tubes are not the answer, at low pressures they pinch and deflate just as quickly.
The way around this problem is "Beadlocks" which can either be an external fitment to a rim or internal tube beadlocks which work like this:
