Exped Roof Rack - Cross bars |
|
Having stupidly bought one of the exped roofracks when I bought the D3, almost two years on am just about getting ontop of the noise issue, having installed a dam on the underside of the leading edge and a full length ali floor, but still bu$$er all use for carrying kayak or surf boards.
Just spotted some photos of the G4 D3 that 'Student Correspondent' posted and noticed a cross bar towards the front of the rack. Those of you in the know, is this a Thule bar with clamps on to the existing longitudinals or is it an LR specific bar?
Cheers

Does the full length ali floor reduce noise at all?

When I got my (ex-G4) rack it also had a cross bar. I believe they are D2 or D1 parts, but don't have details.

Nope I thought it made it worse in fact. It just makes it easier to load, Now got a front runner and this is just as noisy

I agree with Ken - the floor made the wind noise worse and also reduced MPG because the wind dams up underneath and is squeezed out the sides whereas without the floor it escapes upwards. I intend to work on a solution to this once I'm back on my pins and can climb ladders again (3 months probably, so don't hold your breath), but in short I'm looking at doing the same as AndrewS with a neoprene skirt across the front of the rack between the rook and the rack, or cutting 2 or 3 largish holes in the front section of the floor but this kinda defeats the aboveject of having the plate and I'd get the noise back as soon as the holes were covered with a load. LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Thanks for that info Ken and Disconutter. Saved me a bit of cost and faffing around.

I took all the chocolate fireguards off the front and sides of mine leaving me with a flat, usable rack that better suits my needs. The side rails really are weak so I had no qualms removing them. It's now a bit quieter than standard, but haven't fitted an air dam below the front lip yet. Striupping it down makes it a bit lighter and easier to fit on my own too. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Bill
Found that the Ali floor did increase the strumming, but with the addition of the front dam/skirt, noise is significantly reduced. I mounted the ali below the cross beams enabling me to still utilise load eyes in their track. I have preferred to keep the chocolate fire guard as this keeps loadspace relatively dry. Hoping at some stage to mount some spots.
On another subject, how did you get on with fabrication of brackets for your A Bar, I still have'nt found a solution.
Cheers

A Bar Brackets
I have a man working on it (two sets). Short of lighting a fire under his I can't get him to speed up as he sees the task as subsidiary to his livelihood. I reckon that I might have them this week and I'll try a set out. If they fit I'll offer you the second set at cost. Howzat?
