Door Mirror - Shell replacement
Having cracked my door mirror last summer I have been on the lookout for a second hand mirror to replace the cracked outer shell. Wiggs kindly sold me one on Friday and I have now managed to change the shell of the original mirror with the second hand one.
My mirror is a memory powerfold version, Wiggs's second hand was not so a direct replacement wouldn't work.
I first removed the two torx screws holding the outed sheild and one holding the back and front shell together then carefully (!) drilled the three "plastic rivet heads" from the remaining fixings
This allowed me to remove the front mirror housing bezel. Having pushed the mirror forward I also removed the inner pivot cover (extreme right in the picture below)

On the non-powerfold mirror the pivot is held together with a crimped metal sleeve that compressed the fold back spring. this had to be removed (butchered) to be able split the piviot and remove the outer mirror shell.

With the shell now removed I could start to dismantle the mirror on the car. The shell comes off the same as described above.

Next the power/sense cable needs removed from the pan/tilt mechanism.

Next the outer support arm can be removed by extracting the 2 Torx T20 screws from the powerfold pivot.

The support arm can now be fitted to the "new" shell

And refitted to the powerfold pivot, being careful to route the acbling correctly and replacing the power/sense plug into the pan/tilt mechanism

The bezel can now be refitted using self tapping screws, care is needed with the inner fixing as the blind whole is short and you can pierce the mirror shell if you use too long a screw. I packed mine with a couple of washers just to be sure.

You now just need to replace the mirror glass, reconnecting the heating connectors as you go.

There are a few more photos in my mirror shell replacement gallery.Number31

Probably glaringly obvious but how do I remove the intact glass in a 2nd hand complete mirror to get at the internals to then split it all apart ?
Thanks in advance,
Mike

Missed your post but sussed it anyway, slipped a thin driver in to the clip at the bottom and it popped out nicely. If it helps the outer two screws I used 1 1/4" x 8 pan heads with an m6 washer. The inner was same with 3 washers so I guess a 3/4 x 8 with washer would do it.
Butchering the spring is easy, big driver inbetween the casing from underneath and pry around the base until the metal bends.
Jobs done and saved a fortune

Hi Number31, This is interesting.
I wanted to replace my broken door mirror. When I removed it two of the bolts sheared off.
I bought a used one but one of the bolts is also sheared off. It is currently held on with two bolts but I fear the ingress of moisture.
I bought new bolts but it appears they are now torx screws. They seem to fit though.
I now have another mirror with three clear bolt holes but the shell is broken so I thought i could swap the bits around.
I can't seem to find a way of separating the bracket from the body. I see you butchered the washer to remove it but how did you refit it ? Can you reuse the butchered washer or get a new one ?
