Some of the D4 are also high RFL its only when they have DPF and Adblue that its comes right down but they do not like short journeys they get clogged right up and cost a fortune to sort out.

Define “short journeys” please.

I know the regular servicing is not cheap.

One of the problems with car forums is they can very easily scare the s*** out of you. If I’d read a lot of the stuff on Freel2 forum before I bought my first Freelander2 I doubt I’d have ever bought one!

I’m not saying some folk don’t have issues with their cars, but I don’t think that everyone does.

I think the definition is journeys under 30 mins of constant driving. Sitting in traffic jams kills these engines and clogs the DPF and EGR valves. They need to get up to temperature and drive at a good speed (over 40 mph) to get the systems working and keep everything clean.

You have to remember a lot of members only post on here when they have an issue, when the cars running fine you dont here a peep from them.

Mmm

Well fortunately I don’t usually get involved with traffic jams, but I do drive 3 miles to take the dog for a walk - it’s on an A road so get up to speed, but not for very long.
Obviously that’s not the only driving I do, regular motorway trips apply too.

Sorry to the OP if I’ve hijacked your thread.

Its 3 mile journeys that will cause the issues the engine and DPF will not get up to temperature and will not be able to work efficently.
My 2012 D4 only does long journeys and the DPF is clean the EGR valves are original and are working correctly.
I have just rebuilt an engine on a 2016 D4 that only did short journeys and the engine was totally clogged each inlet manifold had 1kg of gunk inside, i noticed how heavy they were when removing them and weigh them before and after cleaning.

I'm potentially in the market for a D4 - I also considered a D3 but somehow the £585 road fund licence is something I have a real problem with.

If you're worried about road tax then this isn't the car for you. Trust me, it will be the least of your worries Whistle

Also, 3 mile trips will kill any car but could wreck a D4.

For a three mile trip, it would be better for the planet and the pocket. Thumbs Up

Rolling Eyes

Nissan Leaf - each to their own, but that is definitely not for me.

I’d thought you guys would’ve come up with some reasons why I should buy a D4 - like it’d be great for towing my caravan. Or that they are just great & put a smile on your face every time you drive it.

Its a great car but they are best used than not. Short journeys are not good for them, but if you want to tow the caravan, do transcontinental trips or just shift stuff, then not much competes with it.

At the end of the day only you know if you want one, can afford to run it and put up with their 'foibles'. Thumbs Up

Sorry we don't want to put you off, there are many good reasons to buy a Discovery but we do want to be honest with you.
At the end of the day you need to have all the facts in front of you and have driven a few so that you can make your own informed decision.
We do see a lot of people join who have not done that and are always complaining about how unreliable these vehicles are and how expensive they are to repair and when you look further into it they quite often have spent every penny buying the first Discovery they see. having not read things like
https://www.disco3.co.uk/mediawiki/index.p...;redlink=1

and when things start to go wrong they join the forum and start finding out about oil pumps failing and the costs of repairs, if they had got all the information first they could have bought a vehicle with all of the work completed.
