Yup, front diff is on the short list of culprits. makes sense that it only makes a noise under load, the sound could be down to the gears meshing together poorly.

Injectors I need to check somehow

Wheel bearings & transmission, seem a less likely outcome.

Keep the ideas coming, I can then have a decent conversation with the dealer to see what we can look into next.

Maybe drop down a gear or two, but keep the same speed, when the noise appears and see if anything changes. Should rule out the gearbox. Could be transfer box I guess though.

But seems to be pointing more towards diffs, or driveshafts / CVs etc

Yup, I had tried changing gear on a previous drive, from memory the noise didn't really change, which i guess would point towards something that maintains it's speed / motion in relation to the vehicle speed regardless of gear or revs, but only shows signs of issue under load, therefore something in the drive train past the gearbox.
Transfer box, Props, Diff, Half shafts, CV's, hubs or wheel bearings? I seem to keep coming back to diff.

Have you tried another set of wheels and tyres? If you find a donor set I would look at trying them….

You may have a tyre which has slightly deformed… it will still balance up but run slightly ovoid…

It’s worth a try!

@Farmer Chalk
Hear what you say. I'm pretty confident that its not the tyres. When they were roadforce balanced it should have shown if the tyre was out of shape or balance & then the tyre is moved on the rim to offside the difference I believe. Only one tyre was moved on the rim & everything came into spec. Also the tyres maintain there motion even when the foot it taken off the throttle, yet the drone/vibration stops immediately the throttle is released.

I'd love to try another set of wheels to discount them once & for all, but don't have access to any at the moment.

Appreciate the thinking & response

Have you drained the diffs and transfer box oils and closely examined for metal fragments?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

@M3DPO
I haven't personally, but all the fluids including diff & transfer box were changed in July 20 it's only done 1500 since then. As the LR dealer did the change, i don't know what came out in the way of swarf with the oil!

I was getting similar problems with my D3. Turned out to be one of the diffs. My local independent ran it up to about 30 mph or so on his ramp with the wheels off the floor and went round with his stethoscope and you could hear it clearly, in fact if you put your hand on the diff. one could feel it as well.

Well hopefully I can bring this thread to a close.

With much persistence, I got the dealer to seriously look at this issue which has been highlighted reguarly since purchase in July 2020 & after a lengthy road test with the service manager managed to convey the vibration / drone I was referring too. Ultimately they narrowed it down to the transfer box. Just picked the car up today with a new transfer box fitted & the drive has been transformed!

So pleased this issue appears to have been resolved as I was seriously teetering on the edge of moving her on.

Thank goodness for LR extended warranty.
