Can't we just assume those that don't participate aren't affected ?

If you are talking about a sheared crank, then no but if you are talking about catastrophic (but still running in a clattery, noisy fashion) following what I suspect to be rotated crank bearings, then 'yes'...

In the process of building - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear!
Mine failed due to thrust bearing failure - which is pretty rare especially on an auto.
Current engine is within 10K of the mileage of the old one.Mark.
